Amazed
Poe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's amazing to me but I can't
Seem to say what I'm doing here
My tongue is all twisted around the air
I'm looking for words that were so well rehearsed
But I can't find them anywhere
With you there's no easy answer
It's true
You change the equation that I add up to
And all of the things I thought I knew
You turn it around

I'm amazed
When push comes to shove what I'd give to you
Everything
I'm amazed
The hallways I wouldn't mind crawling through
And I'd do it for days and days

I'm amazed, I'm amazed

That places your taking me to

Wait, I thought I had this down
I built all my cages and my hide out
I covered all my bases
But you
You creep in like a whisper
I try not to listen but I hear you
I don't know just what it is you do
But do it again

I'm amazed
When push comes to shove what I'd give to you
Everything

I'm amazed
The walls that I wouldn't mind crashing through
And I'd do it for days and days

I'm amazed, I'm amazed

At all of the things I know you have done
'Cause this time I think we've really won
That tables have turned
Now I'm taking my hat off to you
You said "we'll see"
But darling it's all clear to me

I'm amazed

And here in the foyer the hallway is small
I don't really think it's a hallway at all
It's a maze

Johnny your suitcase was finally received
She's packed up her things and she's ready to leave

It's amazing

All of the ink that was bled from your hands
Has painted a picture that she understands
It's amazed

And here by the ocean the sky's full of leaves
And what they can tell you depends on what you believe
It's a maze

The ass is a tree and the voices were three
And all that is gone is here sweeping through me
It's amazing

The voice of my father still loud as before
It used to scare me but not anymore

Father :
What is it Annie

Daughter:
I miss you

Overall Meaning

In this song, Poe is expressing her awe and disbelief at the power that her lover has over her. She can't seem to articulate her feelings and thoughts in a coherent manner, despite rehearsing them over and over again. She admits that with her lover, there is no easy answer, and things are not always what they seem. Every time she thinks she has it figured out, her lover surprises her and turns everything around. Nevertheless, she is willing to do anything for her lover, including crawling through hallways and crashing through walls. She is amazed by the places her lover is taking her to, both literally and figuratively.

The lyrics take an interesting turn towards the end of the song, with references to a few obscure characters and events. Johnny's suitcase being received likely refers to the 1948 movie "Johnny Belinda," in which the singer is a deaf-mute who is wrongly accused of murder. The line "all of the ink that was bled from your hands has painted a picture that she understands" may be a nod to Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar," where the singer talks about wanting to write a novel that is "red and purple and green," just like the colors that blood turns when it dries. The mention of the three voices could be a reference to the three Fates of Greek mythology, or perhaps the Three Graces. The line "the ass is a tree" is a Surrealist reference to the work of Salvador Dali, who famously painted a picture of a tree growing out of a donkey's back. Finally, the exchange between the father and daughter at the end of the song adds a poignant layer of emotion, suggesting that the singer may be missing her own father, who has passed away.

Overall, "Amazed" is a complex and multi-layered song that rewards careful listening and analysis. It speaks to the universal experience of being swept away by love, and the disorienting feeling of having one's world turned upside down. By referencing a variety of literary and artistic tropes, it also invites the listener to engage with the song on a more intellectual level.

I love how the hallway and relationship between Navi & Karen really comes through in this song, the correlations I mean, "The hallways I wouldn't mind crawling through" its about so much. its about relationships and how they can be shattered by anything in a minute, its amazing... its a maze. Its amazing how we get through those mazes. The play on words. this song is probably the best use of the notions brought up in her brother's book, House Of Leaves.
