The name, Poets of the Fall, comes from the idea that two opposites form a whole, ie. there isn't one without the other. "Poets" here represent the positive side and "the Fall" the negative. Of course, when you join these two concepts, the "Poets" starts to sound just a tad mischievious as well... depends, of course, on how you perceive "the Fall". You might see it as a beautiful crisp season and the "Poets" are its insightful architects...
Among many others, the trio has received the following awards:
* Best Finnish Act at MTV Europe Music Awards 2006
* Best Finnish Music Video of all time in TV2's Musiikki-TV; two bronze Muuvi Awards and Best Music Video of 2006 at The Voice (video Carnival of Rust)
* Two Emma Awards (the Finnish Grammys) in 2005 - the best debut album and the best new act
* Best Finnish band at the NRJ Radio Awards 2006
* Commercial Radio Stations' Newcomer of the Year Award in 2005

Poets of the Fall Lyrics

No appeal
I've been to places, I've seen the tidings,
I bought a book of rules for every coin that I could steal
And so I came to gaze upon the stars, when they were yet unborn
And consequently, tear at my old scars, and the mask I had outworn
So when I'm crying alone
Grow me a garden of roses
Paint me the colors of sky and rain
Teach me to speak with their voices
Show me the way and I'll try again
I've heard the rumors, started fires, I sowed a sordid lot of plays for keeps for what I need, behold
The demons that I freed
I've tried my best at wearing the hard hat, but healing doesn't seem to happen when you hide away the
Seed
And so I came across the medicine man, and he showed me what I'd forlorn
For if I'm stayed it happens by my own hand, and my own voice full of scorn
So when I'm crying alone
Yeah, when I'm cold as a dying stone
Grow me a garden of roses
Paint me the colors of sky and rain
Teach me to speak with their voices
Show me the way and I'll try again
Without you I'm nothing at all
And life has the face of a morbid game
With you nothing seems impossible
It all seems to fit the frame
So when I'm crying alone
Yeah, when I'm cold as a dying stone
Grow me a garden of roses
Paint me the colors of sky and rain
Teach me to speak with their voices
Show me the way and I'll try again
The song "Roses" by Poets of the Fall is about someone who has been through some tough experiences, has made mistakes, and wants to learn from them. In the first verse, the singer talks about the things he's done and the places he's been to, but realizes that they didn't bring him any lasting satisfaction or fulfillment. He wants to start again and find joy in life. He seeks out the medicine man, who teaches him some lessons, helping him to grow past his difficult memories and towards a brighter future.
In the chorus, the singer asks for the help of the listener, or perhaps a higher power, to show him how to grow and speak, so he can try again at life. In the second verse, the singer confesses to his mistakes and desires to heal, but finds that hiding from the pain isn't the way to do it. He learns that he has to confront his issues, and that's where true healing occurs. He finds that he needs someone to help him through the rocky terrain, and acknowledges that without that help, he's lost.
Overall, "Roses" is a song about seeking out help and wanting to grow past past mistakes. It's a hopeful song that acknowledges that healing isn't easy but is worth the effort, and there is always room to grow and improve.
