Data & Picard
Pogo Lyrics

You know, back when I was in the academy, we would follow every toast with a song!

(Klingon singing)

Tis better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved at all!
Come cheer up, my lads
Come cheer up, my lads
Tis better to have loved and lost
Tis better to have loved and lost
Captain Jean-Luc Picard
Then never to have loved at all
Of the Federation starship
Come cheer up, my lads
Come cheer up, my lads

Tis better to have loved and lost

Captain Jean-Luc Picard

When I have plucked the rose
Tea, Earl grey, hot
Longing still, for that which longer nurseth the disease
In faith, I do not love thee
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
When I have plucked the rose
Plucked the rose
Longing still, for that which longer nurseth the disease
In faith, I do not love thee
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Tis better to have loved and lost (ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba)
Then never to have loved at all (ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba)

Overall Meaning

The song "Data & Picard" by Pogo is a tribute to the iconic TV series "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and its main characters Data and Jean-Luc Picard. The opening lines refer to a common practice at the Starfleet Academy, where every toast was followed by a song. The Klingon language is used to create a unique and authentic space atmosphere. The lyrics are playful and deliver a message of the importance of love and its experience, even if it ends in loss.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the significance of having loved and lost rather than never having loved at all. The following lines resume the description of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the Enterprise starship. The song then switches to a series of coded numbers that describe the starship's location in space. The verse changes to a mix of famous quotes from different authors, including William Shakespeare, and reiterates the idea of longing for something even though it can hurt.

The song continues with the chorus and ends with a hypnotic and slightly experimental phrase. Overall, "Data & Picard" reflects the love and admiration for the "Star Trek" series, and particularly "The Next Generation," and delivers a positive message on the value of human experience.

After listening to this song and watching every single episode of TNG, I have been able to pinpoint where each of these samples come from:

β€œYou know, back when I was in the academy.../Come cheer up, my lads”: S3 E18 β€œAllegiance”

Klingon Victory Chant: S6 E16-17 β€œThe Birthright (Parts 1 & 2)”

Data singing Che Gelida Manina: S4 E25 β€œIn Theory”

β€œβ€˜Tis better to have loved and lost.../When I have plucked the rose” and all other Shakespeare quotes: S3 E24 β€œMΓ©nage Γ  Troi”

β€œ1-7-3-4-6-7-3-2-1-4-7-6-Charlie…” S4 E3 β€œBrothers”

β€œCompletely unbroken sentence moving from topic to topic”: S6 E25 β€œTimescape”

β€œCaptain Jean-Luc Picard of the Federation Starship.../Tea, Earl Grey, Hot”: Ubiquitous throughout the series

β€œThat’s an interesting twist” S3 E11 β€œThe Hunted”

This is what YouTube used to be. Giving independent creators a platform to show their work.

Now it's just full of corporate greed.

That's why Pewdiepie losing the #1 spot was such a big deal. He was the last "YouTuber" standing, before a massive corporate entity took top spot. It was like watching the last thing that made YouTube so great in the first place, die.

Sorry for the rant, it's just really sad to see.
