Last Song
Poison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I lost my way
You were my light
When the others wronged me
You did me right

When I look in your eyes
Don't tell me lies
You tell me the truth
Your words, they get me through

This is all I've got
This is all I'd say
If this were my last day

This is my last song
It's all I got
If I bare my soul
Don't you break my heart
Won't you sing along
This is my last song
It's all I got
So don't you break my heart

Wrote down these words
Put them in this song
I play it for you
Pray they don't come out wrong

Cause all I've gots my word
I give it to you
Now it may not be much
It's the best that I can do

This is all I've got
This is all I say
So please don't walk away

This is my last song
It's all I got
If I bare my soul
Don't you break my heart
Won't you sing along
This is my last song
It's all I got
So don't you break my heart

If this were my last breath
Of my last day
My last chance
This is what I'd say

I thank you for the laughter
Sorry for the tears
Time to say goodbye
I say goodbye
After all these years

You shouldn't have broke my heart

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Poison's song The Last Song focus on the theme of farewell and appreciation of a loved one who has been a constant support. The singer talks about how the person he is addressing has always been his guiding light, especially during difficult times when others had mistreated him. When the singer looks into this person's eyes, he expects honesty and the truth. He acknowledges that the words of this person have been a source of solace and strength for him.

The song's chorus implies that this is the last song that the singer will write before he leaves; he pours his heart out and asks the person not to break his heart. He acknowledges that the only thing he can offer is his word, and he hopes that it is enough. The singer pleads for the person to listen to his last song, which is a prayer that he has not messed it up. He admits that he has nothing else to give and begs the person not to walk away.

In the second verse, the singer explains that he has written down his feelings and put them into the song he is playing, hoping that they come out right. He hints that the person he is addressing might be aware of his shortcomings, and even though what he has is not much, it is the best he can do. The bridge emphasizes that if this were his last breath, he would thank the person for the good times and apologize for the bad ones, and say his final farewell.

Overall, the lyrics to Poison's song The Last Song beautifully capture the poignancy of a final goodbye.

I pine for the past....Don't be sad those days are behind us, be happy we lived them! Great times, great friends, great music, great memories!

@Stu Pidasso+ Now we know what our parents meant when they said, "I remember in the good ole days".... Our "Good ole Days" were the 80's and I wouldn't trade it for anything, including the good and the bad. I was the perfect age (17 in 1980) to experience the Teen scene and then the over 21 scene which lead me to be a catering Chef for the Studio's and independents. I worked on the Unskinny Bop video for Poison feeding the crew and Band (Brett was really a nice guy). It's all of those experiences that made me who I am today. Much stronger mentally, a passion for living life one day at a time, yet also looking towards the future and becoming nonjudgmental towards others. Having said all that, I'd go back in a second to live it all over again with just a few minor changes!! Not so much use of "Party Favors". LOL ;)

@Lerxstification

@@chefscorner7063 It seems you survived the party favors scene just fine. You are almost 60 now, right, going strong! Those were awesome years for sure!

@chefscorner7063

@@Lerxstification Totally Awesome Years to be sure!!! Unfortunaly, my body is catching up to all the things I did to it while being indestructible (during my 20's and early 30"s). Ugghhh!!! LOL... ;)
