Polo G was originally known for his Chicago drill sound, but eventually transitioned to a more melodic style. He has been noted for his "vivid and explicit storytelling"; his lyrics often involve tough subjects, including racism and mental health. He also regularly pays homage to his hometown, and, as noted by Ayana Rashed of Respect, "he is also quick to acknowledge the common injustice and frequent police brutality he and so many others face on the daily". He has stated that American rapper Lil Wayne and hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur are his biggest influences. He also grew up listening to Gucci Mane, as well as Chicago rappers Lil Durk, G Herbo and Chief Keef.
Bartlett was born in the Old Town area of Chicago. He was raised by both of his parents and grew up with three siblings in a small project development known as Marshall Field Garden Apartments. Before his rise to fame, Bartlett spent multiple stints in prison. Bartlett's first song ever recorded was titled "ODA". Upon creating a SoundCloud account in 2018, he released the track "Gang With Me", which quickly racked up millions of plays. He continued gaining traction with his songs "Welcome Back" and "Neva Cared". Bartlett went on to release "Finer Things", a song he wrote while incarcerated, in the latter half of 2018 and quickly gained millions of views. In early 2019, Bartlett released "Pop Out" featuring Lil Tjay which peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song's music video gained over 200 million views on YouTube and led to him signing a record deal with Columbia Records. Bartlett also released videos for his songs "Deep Wounds", "Through Da Storm", "Effortless", and "Dyin' Breed" from his critically acclaimed debut studio album Die a Legend, which was released on June 7, 2019, and peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200. "Heartless", a single released later in 2019, featured production from Mustard, and was later featured on his second album.
On February 14, 2020, Polo G released the track "Go Stupid", with rappers Stunna 4 Vegas and NLE Choppa. The song also featured production from Mike Will Made-It and Tay Keith. "Go Stupid" became his second song on the Hot 100 (after "Pop Out"), peaking at number 60 on the Hot 100, number 29 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and number 20 on Hot Rap Songs. Polo G released his second studio album, The Goat, on May 15, 2020. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and ten songs from the album hit the Hot 100, including "Flex" featuring Juice Wrld and "Be Something" featuring Lil Baby, peaking at numbers 30 and 57, respectively.
In July 2020, Polo G was featured on Juice Wrld's posthumous album Legends Never Die on the song "Hate the Other Side". The song peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, Polo G's first top-ten single and highest charting overall song. On August 11, 2020, Polo G was included in XXL's 2020 Freshman Class. Later that month, he released the music video for his single "Martin & Gina", which peaked at number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Gang, gang, gang (Mike Will Made it)
Lil Capalot, bitch, ha
(Tay Keith, fuck these niggas up)
Hit the strip after school
Couldn't wait 'til I got outta class
Used to stare at the clock and shit
Before all this rap shit I was gang-bangin'
And doin' high-speeds on the cops and shit
And I'm straight from the Chi'
But I ball like a king up in Cali'
And shoot like Stojaković
Keep applying that pressure, I go on the run
It ain't no lettin' up, ain't no stoppin' it
Had to tell my lil brother to chill, gotta stay in the house
Come outside, he be poppin' shit
You ain't heard about us? Well, you need to go watch the news
Niggas know we be droppin' shit
Got the feds on my ass in the hood
'Cause they think I'm the one who been buyin' them Glocks and shit
I'm just focused on music, they say my last tape was a classic
But I got some hotter shit
I be rockin' a show, or if I'm not up in the stu'
Then I'm fuckin' this cash off
Don't you know Polo G, skinny-tall with the dreads
That lil nigga be rappin' his ass off
Yeah, I heard she got surgery, still wanna climb from the back
Just to see if her ass soft
Go like Harden, with rockets we blast off
Tried to throw us some bullets but we made 'em fumble
Like now you ain't gettin' that pass off
Spin the block, now I'm takin' my mask off
Hit the gas like we racin', speed off in them foreigns
And leave tire marks on the asphalt
It's gon' be RIP once your ass caught
He like frontin', we knockin' his cap off
'Nother day, a new chain on or a MAC bought
All this ice got me freezin' like Jack Frost (4 time)
That boy a bitch, that's his dad fault (bitch)
If you play, then you late, we could crash out (let's go)
When I up in his shit, bet it's man down
In BOA pullin' them bands out (cash)
DOA, bitch, I get your mans out
A rockstar from the block, I stand out
Came from nothin', I fuck my advance up
When I hit the game with my flow, niggas ran off (no cap)
Fuck it, I'm not your average Joe
When I leave the house I tuck it
I'm rich, I don't shop on no budget
He clutchin', my lil youngin want him a bucket (score)
I hop on this bitch and run it
If I said it, I seen it or done it
These lil niggas never robbed nobody, ain't caught no body
And ain't gettin' no money (cap)
Where I'm from it's sports or gunplay
We looked up to the killers and dealers
But even them niggas won't make it out one day
Before my first M, I been had hood fame
Took off like I was on the runway
I'm a star but still post on the one way
Them niggas talk but they won't play
We let them guns sing like the choir on Sunday
Yeah, yeah
Hop on the scene and I'm thuggin'
That Glock on my hip, so you know that I'm clutchin'
Catch me a opp, I'ma down him in public
Police keep askin', I'm changin' the subject
The way I grew up, man, a nigga was workin'
Why the fuck you got a gun you not gonna bust it?
And a hundred some' shots, I ain't doin' no tussin'
Givin' niggas temptation like he David Ruffin
I ain't gon' cap, I don't even like rappin'
But I love wrappin' them bodies and shit
Fucked a bitch and when I get done
I'ma up my Glock and then rob the bitch
Catch a nigga when he clock out
I'ma get him wacked at his job and shit
And I don't know why the police keep fuckin' with me
'Cause they ain't stoppin' shit, yeah
Spin on your block like a remix
Shoot him in the face, get his teeth lit
Extended clip like a broomstick
Shoot a flick like Netflix
Scratch a opp off the check-list
I just bought a gun off Craigslist
Shoot a opp in his brain, I'm leavin' a stain
Only thing you see is red shit
If the police behind, we kick dust
My gun need some drawers, it got nuts
Whole gang we strapped, don't test us
If a nigga play he gon' get bust, yeah
NLE the top shotta
Don dada, got the bombs like Al-Qaeda
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
In Polo G's song Go Stupid, he starts off by reflecting on his gang-banging days before becoming a rapper. He talks about how he used to do high-speeds with the police before moving to California, where he now ball like a king. He keeps applying pressure and won't stop grinding even though he is being watched by the feds. The song is full of energy with catchy ad-libs and hooks. Polo G then goes on to talk about how he stands out in the rap game and how he came from nothing but now has fame and money. He also calls out other rappers who are not true to themselves, saying they talk but won't play. He goes on to talk about his street life, robbing people, and shooting guns.
Overall, the song highlights Polo G's rough upbringing, his early street life, and his relentless pursuit of success. The song paints a vivid picture of what the young rapper has been through on his way to the top, and the struggles he still faces to this day.
