Spokes
Pond Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She tattooed her failures on her arms which ran wrists to shoulderblades
She wore them above her charm bracelet given to her on her birthday
A silver wrist bound carousel given to her by her father
So bright back then but tarnished since, she used to be the favorite daughter

That no longer applies
Expiration date went by
You used to be so pretty

Knuckles crack from faulty swings leaving memories of him
Imprinted in the purple yellow browns that only recently began
To fade back to the colors you are really supposed to be
In sickened ways you guiltily found them to be so pretty

Your long face wears long sleeves
To hide what's underneath
Everyone just thinks your clumsy

The blue backed cards could only be used for flimsy construction
After he took the royalty and lined his spokes with them
Ferris wheels of noble men spray out the perfect rhythm
The dirt hill jumps were always best he found out by the prison

That's where your real father lives
He didn't go down with his ship

That's just what your mother told you
Go

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pond's song Spokes depicts a narrative of a woman who has gone through a series of failures in her life, resulting in permanent tattoos that mark each of them on her arms that run from wrists to shoulder blades. She wears them proudly above her charm bracelet, given to her on her birthday, which is in stark contrast to the silver wrist bound carousel given to her by her father, once so bright but now tarnished. She used to be the favorite daughter but that no longer applies, and her expiration date has since passed. The woman's knuckles crack from faulty swings, leaving memories of someone who left an imprint on her life in purples, yellows, and browns that only recently began to fade. In sickened ways, she guiltily finds them to be pretty.

The woman's long face wears long sleeves to hide what's underneath, and everyone just thinks she is clumsy. The blue-backed cards that the person she loved once gifted her can only be used for flimsy construction. After he took the royalty, he lined his spokes with them, and Ferris wheels of noble men spray out the perfect rhythm. The dirt hill jumps were always best, and he found out by the prison where her real father now lives. He didn't go down with his ship; that's just what her mother told her. The song leaves a sense of heartbreak and loss as the woman bears the weight of her past on her skin.

Both song and video are beyond outstanding, fit together so well. It just oozes everything about the time. I was 18 when this song came out, but SOMEHOW I only came across it now at 45 years old. But it STILL brought me right back to 1996 on even the first listen. Just a perfect crystallized capsule of the era. I just wish I had gotten to enjoy this masterpiece for the last 27 years!

That riff was used in a scene in "Daria." It's the only part of the song they used. It caused a week-obsession in which I HAD to find this song. I finally did, and now Pond's become one of my favorite power-pop trios of all time.
