@Aubs the 2006 edition is unaltered, but I think it was limited or something, and while it's probably serviceable it does not have the best video quality.
If you want the original trilogy unedited I highly suggest Army's despecialized edition, you have to download them in a specific way, and they're really big files, but you can read the downloading guide on their site, or watch a tutorial on YouTube, it's really not that hard, but it takes time.

I think the Special Edition of Empire is actually not that bad. I feel it's changes are justified, such as having Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor, and CGI-ing some of Cloud City to make it look.cooler, especially changing some of the backgrounds in Cloud City to look much more Star Warsy.

The problem was never the fact that the SE exists. The problem was the erasure of film history. If you want to make a version where Luke shoots lasers out of his butt, you can do it. But taking away the original versions was Lucas' greatest crime.

TPM shows why Anakin is so important, his strong attachment to his mom, why Obi-Wan wasn't right teacher to him, why he hates Tatooine, Jedi rules, Palpatine becoming chancellor, world building, etc...And of course, podracing and Darth Maul.
AOTC actually tells a story (Palpatine's rise to power by manipulation Republic and Separatists, Anakin's progression of falling to the Dark Side, start of the Clone Wars), develops characters, shows us real war, new planets, species, ships, droids, world, and has connection with 1 and 3.
What ROTS show us? The largest battle in the Clone Wars, deaths of Dooku and Grievous, Kashyyk battle, Anakin's conflict with Jedi and himself, his weakness (save who he loves), which perfectly works with saving Luke, Palpatine's manipulation and rise to power, Order 66, 2 amasing final battles and the creation of Darth Vader and Empire, birth of Luke and Leia, new hope. It is meaning for the whole Galaxy and is the most emotional.

Before the droid army of CIS was formed and attacked, Jedi order was enough to solve problems.
Jedi needed these clones, war has already begun. On Geonosis they had no choice - trust them or die. They knew that council member ordered them. The host was killed, so find more information was problematic.

Got lost in it again. Leia's heartbroken look as Boba Fett takes off with her lover. This is Star Wars. Emotion and characters climbing an arc and setting up for the next chapter.

Also like how the 2011 version has opened balconies and such. Makes it feel like a big city. A few extra shots are nice too, as long as you're not tampering with the story and the tone. Such as Luke screaming when he chooses to jump and die rather than join Vader. That kind of thing is awful.

I do really like the addition of the windows to help Cloud City feel less enclosed. In fact, I think they could have added more. That said, I do think the colour correction on the Despecialised Edition is the best of the 4, though the Blu Ray edition isn't bad either.

Really don't mind the Special Edition changes in Empire. They're comparatively restrained and beneficial. There's nothing horrible, like the Greedo-shooting alteration in Ep.4 or the Jabba's palace band / "Noooo!" alterations in Ep.6., so ... thumbs up.

Mind you, if I had my way, you'd be able to customize the viewing experience to your liking with an advanced form of "seamless branching" - tick the changes you like, cross the changes you don't, and store my preferences for this film. Maybe on some future format, eh? :)

Now dont get me wrong- The first Star Wars movie I’ve ever watched was A New Hope special edition in theatres. But there is something magical about the original prints that made me a lifelong Star Wars Fan

That's only the case for Empire. People are far less forgiving for Star Wars and Jedi (especially the former), but Empire's changes are rather benign and can often be seen as improvements. I still prefer the original (Harmy's in this case, 4K77/83 for the other two films) simply because they're the originals, but I don't necessarily see other people's preference for the Special Edition in this case to be unjustified.

Nah, I'd still go for for Harmy's, too. I do like the warmth in TN1's, though. People are loving the 'new windows' on the 2011 SE, but to me they look quite hokey. Plus the grade is the least appealing. Harmy all the way, baby!

Blue Ray's are the best version, from boba sounding like a clone, to the city looking and feeling like a city, to landos message going out to an entire city and being able to see the reaction to the empires presence. Fleshed out the world and made the whole movie better for it.

Or they just genuinely prefer the original version like me. Boba Fett’s original voice is way better, new Emperor still looks goofy and way different from the ROTJ version, and the cgi is incredibly distracting from the rest of the film, especially the Cloud City sequences. Too bad there’s no official release of the pre special editions anymore so everyone can have their version.

i prefer the special edition for it's windows and how it made cloud city feel like it wasn't just another coridor on the tantive that we didn't see. The grindhouse editoin is my next prefered because it has a crisper image and personally i prefer that. the other two are on par with one another in my opinion.. and yes i'm watching this nearly four years later but you can never predict the algorithm

The addition of windows and scenery made it a lot less claustrophobic and I can’t help but wonder why they didn’t do it with matte paintings back in 1980.

In my Opinion, the Special Edition of Empire is actually pretty good. Yes, the SE's of 4 and 6 are horrible, but you can't deny Changing the Emperors head and adding Windows to Cloud City are actually smart choices, as they only enhance the viewing experience.

ESB is the only Special Edition I like. None of the changes ruin or disrespect the original and they make the movie even more Star Warsy and organic. They are true enhancements. Episode 4 and 6's changes, however, are not good.

Except for Luke screaming as he fell down the shaft in the theater version. Blech. And we really didn't need to see Vader flying to his Star Destroyer in his shuttle. It's like they had to race to get him there in time for his mind-talk with Luke - it didn't really add anything. And the conversation between Vader and the Emperor felt odd.

Agreed, the only problem is he addition of all the tie fighters in the foreground of the shot of the imperial navy. In front of every star destroyer is about 10 tie fighters screaming over the Imperial March and blocking/distracting the view of these incredible ships.

One of the special edition edits nobody else seems to point out. At 0:27 Chewbacca's growl starts sooner so you can't hear the end of Leia's line, in both 1997 and 2004. Pretty stupid to remix audio to drown out a line of dialog.
Anyways, you can hear Leia fine in whatever audio source this is as well as the 1993 audio mix found on the 2006 bonus dvd.

Another one nobody mentions that infuriates me: at 1:52 they change the timing of the music as Slave 1 takes off. Leia's heartbroken stare would always make me tear up. The silence was golden, with just the ship sounds and the laser blasts.

the 2011 version had more outside view that made it look less claustrophobic. with extra scenes.
the grind house edition seemed more grungy. R2D2 looked very dirty in this one.
harmy's was very clean and crisp in lighting and quality.

This movie is so good I would be happy watching any of these versions. And since there seems to be some debate in the comments, I just checked my rip of the 2004 dvd and the windows are there.
They were not additions to the blu-ray.

To my knowledge, the 97' special editions, and the 2004 dvd release are identical (save for the resolution)

The only change in Empire Strikes Back that seems to have upset anyone was changing the Boba Fett voice. I'm fine if they want to make multiple versions, but please just include the original version too in maximum quality. Thankfully we have countless versions now.

Overall I think the Despecialised Edition looks the best, followed by the 2006 GOUT one, though some of the scenes look better in the latter. The addition of the windows and the extra scene in the Special Edition are nice, but I think the colour in the rest doesn't quite make up for it. Grindhouse is the worst by far, being very red with no upsides over any of the other ones.

1:55 Theory: R2’s ptsd gets triggered after seeing Slave I, bringing back memories of when he was nearly destroyed by it after escaping the Venator wreckage during the clone wars. And also when Hondo saved him and Ahsoka’s group of padawans from Grievous, just before R2 not seeing Slave I again until 24 years later.

So I was watching this clip on a YouTube video and when the Slave 1 blasts off (at the 1:50 mark in this video). The music was different than what I remembered. I thought, "Is this a fanedit, or what is this?" I sought out another special edition clip(from the blu-ray I think) and I realized it was so. I absolutely love in the original version, as Han is being flown away, Leia is just staring, knowing everything they worked for was for nothing, Han was gone. That silence was golden. That was a scene I always got misty-eyed over. Not in this version. I've definitely watched the special edition version, but not in the last couple years so I didn't remember that. Does anyone know when it was changed?

I actually think it's oddly over-saturated in places and sticks too close to the Blu-ray white balance on others, when that one was often too green. For this most part, I preferred the GOUT.

My main issue is with the difficulty in finding an original, unadulterated version now.
Give the viewer a choice.
As a 40yo who grew up with the original trilogy, I want to see them as they were; mind-blowingly ahead of their time. Remastering/ digitising the film is fair enough, but I reject the idea of adding or subtracting anything at all from the original content of the films. Half the point is to watch and exclaim "Wow, that looks incredible, I can't believe they managed to do that over 40 years ago".

Harmy’a Despecialized Edition is clearly the winner by comparison. Crisper picture and truer colors. R2-D2’s dome rectangles always looks blue (not sometimes purple or black) and C-3PO is always shiny gold.

Despecialized is the best version & until Disney releases an un-altered 1980 theatrical cut it will be the best. Any change is an insult to the Art Director, Set Designer & Set Decorator that made the movie great in the first place.

Of al the special editions The Empire Strikes Back is the least egregious for me. I liked all of the Cloud City improvements that only added scale, colour and atmosphere. The only thing I disliked personally was the changing of the shots for the Emperor holographic link. At least there was no silly song and dance number, comic dinosaurs/giant lizards with Jawas or silly Sarlacc tentacles type affair going on in Episode V. Having grown up with the originals in the cinema, on VHS, DVD, etc. of all the fan edits I've enjoyed I think I like Ady-Wans Revisited the most.

I understand that Harmy is aiming for the closest to the original release, so my preference is not a criticism of his work.

schnubbel76 yeah, alongside removing the changes made from ‘81 and ‘97 onwards, he also fixed the colour timing to match how the films would have looked in theatres. Notice in the Blu-Ray version the awful magenta tone (particularly with laser blasts and explosions) is present, he restored the colour timing to get rid of that.

I personally didn't mind the Special Editions. Especially TESB, this scene in particular. That said, I can understand why original cut purists want a 4k version of their beloved originals. I don't blame them. Still, I much prefer the additions, they just need tweaked a tad and perhaps some of the later edits Lucas added were unnecessary.

How can it be an alternate timeline if it doesn't even exist? If something is not canon,it doesn't exist in any universe.Boba is a clone,Greedo shot first,Hayden Christensen is Anakin.That's the way it is.

Can't decide if I like the marks on the film version or not. If not I like Harmy's but this is not a good example as the addition Lucas made here is one of the better ideas.

To be fair, in most of these circumstances, the main characters are either surprising them, or in some form of cover. So you see waves of expendable troopers rush out in the open getting blasted, while the heroes get to hide out.

That's literally what is happening. They can aim, but here they were ordered to miss the main characters while they escaped (so they could pick up Luke). Same with the fights in the Death Star, since they wanted them to escape and lead them to the Rebel base.

Should be warmer, more desaturated. Maybe turn down the contrast and un-crush the blacks.

It's not all Lando's fault about what happened to Han. Han actually brought it on himself. He wouldn't have been given to the bounty hunter if he just paid off Jabba. Telling Jabba that Han was needed to fight against the empire would've done no good. That means nothing to Jabba. To Jabba there's no excuse for failing to pay him back.

If they were going to add anything in the special edition. They should have updated the original Matt paintings with some volumetric and animated clouds to give the background some depth and life. After all it's cloud city. I like the windows in theory but the execution on them isn't very convincing.
