Porcupine Tree Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I won't shiver in the cold
I won't let the shadows take their toll
I won't cover my head in the dark
And I won't forget you when we part

Collapse the light into earth

I won't heal given time
I won't try to change your mind
I won't feel better in the cold light of day
But I wouldn't stop you if you wanted to stay

Collapse the light into earth

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Porcupine Tree's "Collapse the Light Into Earth" are expressive of the singer's refusal to allow darkness and shadows to take their toll on his/her life. The first stanza begins with an unwavering declaration of intent to not allow oneself to be overwhelmed by the coldness and darkness of the world. The subsequent lyrics emphasize the singer's determination to remember a person even after they have parted ways. The main theme of the song is the idea of collapsing one thing into another ā€“ the light into the earth ā€“ which in many ways mirrors the singer's own sense of unity and completeness.

The second stanza of the song is just as decisive as the first. The lyrics assert that the singer won't heal given time nor will he/she attempt to alter the opinions of others. Instead, the lyrics seem to suggest that the singer finds comfort in the idea of things staying just as they are, without any need for change. The final line of the song, "Collapse the light into earth," can be seen as a summation of the singer's sense of unity and interconnectedness with the world around him/her.

Overall, "Collapse the Light Into Earth" is a powerful song that speaks to the human experience of struggling against the darkness that can threaten to consume us. The lyrics are evocative and poignant, while the music is haunting and ethereal, making the song a truly memorable work of art.

I remember when I first listened to this song. I was at my best friend's house, in 2006, and I remember she was studying for her driving licence, while I was completely heartbroken. She had to go out for a few hours and I was left there by myself in front of her PC when I discovered this song. I listened to it for at least an hour and couldn't believe how amazing it was. She found me in tears when she came back. This was my first Porcupine Tree song and I will always cherish it dearly.

ā¤ļøšŸ’” This song was eh to me the first time I heard it, and I, too, was heartbroken, but it slowly grew on me, and haunts me now. It's such an amazing song, sad, beautiful.

It is great song .
When my dog died before 5 years ago this song has been played in the radio . I was with her when we took her to vet in last time. It was hard decition to let her go because she suffer before she died . She was very sick and old after years we took care of her .
This song played in the perfect timing because some of the lyrics connected to what I feel to my dog . She was and still special to me very much even years after she passed away and that song touched in sensetive part in my soul.
Every year in 22 of june since then I play this song for her to remember . So thank you porcupine tree that you wrote something that I can relate to him and have a lot of meaning to me .

Dogs are angels on Earth, I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my beautiful Nera on 14.2.2022, she was 12 years and 3 months old.

My dog has fall to sleep only yesterday. I hadn't listened to it for years, but my soul's memory brought me here.
