Out
Porcupine Tree Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Out at the train tracks
I dream of escape
But a song comes onto my iPod
And I realize it's getting late

And I can't take the staring
And the sympathy
And I don't like the questions "How do you feel?"
"How's it going in school?"
And "Do you wanna talk about it?"

Way out
Way out of here
Fade out
Fade out, vanish

And I'm trying to forget you
And I know that I will
In a thousand years, or maybe a week
Burn all your pictures, and cut out your face

The shutters are down and the curtains are closed
And I've covered my tracks
Disposed of the car
Trying to forget even your name and the way that you look
When you're sleeping
Dreaming of this

Way out
Way out of here

Fade out
Fade out, vanish

Overall Meaning

The song "Way Out Of Here" by Porcupine Tree talks about escapism, the desire to forget painful memories, and the emotional weight of constantly being questioned and sympathized with. The singer dreams of escape, but is brought back to reality by his iPod playing a song, reminding him of the passing time. He is tired of the curious and sympathetic stares, and the constant questions about his feelings and mental state. He just wants to leave it all behind and disappear.

The repeated phrase "way out of here" seems to be both an expression of desperation and a plea for guidance. The singer is lost and overwhelmed, and wants to find a way out of his current situation. He talks about trying to forget the person who seems to be the source of his pain, and the lengths he will go to achieve that. He shuts everything down and disposes of all reminders of that person, hoping to erase every trace of their existence. The song ends with the singer repeating the phrase "way out" as if he is still searching for a solution.

'I want to rush and crush it all.' Truely a touch of poetry there.

Francisco Burrola

Why was remastered on 2012?

Sounds so fresh, should sound amazing rerecorded with real drums

Quinn Downton

YHD was reissued in 2013 through Steven's store Headphone Dust so I assume he wanted to make it sound as good as he possibly could. OTSOL was also remastered in 2015. I think these two are definitive now.

And yeah, it would be interesting to hear with real drums!

Lee Charles

Nice, very similar to a Hawkwind song called Magnu

Steven also admitted to nicking 'Masters of the universe' for this.
