DAZED AND CONFUSED
Portland Cello Project Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Been dazed and confused for so long, it's not true
Wanted a man, never bargained for you
Lots of people talk, a few of them know
Soul of a man was created below

You hurt and abuse, telling all of your lies
Run around, sweet baby, Lord, how they hypnotize
Sweet little baby, gotta know where you've been
Gonna love you, baby, here I come again

Every day I work so hard, bringing home my hard earned pay
Try to love you, baby but you push me away
Don't know where you're going, only know just where you've been
Sweet little baby, I want you again

Been dazed and confused for so long, it's not true
Wanted a man, never bargained for you

Take it easy, baby, let them say what they will
Will your tongue wag so much when I send you the bill, oh?

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of Portland Cello Project's song "Dazed and Confused" is a recount of the singer's struggle with confusion and frustration. They have been dazed and confused for so long that it no longer seems true. They wanted a man in their life, but not the one that they bargained for. They speak of other people who talk, but few of them truly know what they are going through. Then, they make a reference to the creation of the soul of a man below.

The second stanza reveals that the singer is in a toxic relationship. They are being hurt and abused by their partner who tells lies to make them stay. The partner is constantly running around, hypnotizing them with their charm. The singer asks where their partner is going and wants to know where they have been. In a desperate attempt to keep their partner in their life, they say that they will love them anyway and come back to them. The third stanza speaks of the daily struggle of earning a living and trying to love their partner who keeps pushing them away. The singer doesn't know where their partner is going, but knows where they have been. They still want their sweet little baby back in their life.

The last line of the song is a sarcastic remark. The singer tells their partner to take it easy and let people say what they want. But they also ask if their partner’s tongue will still wag when the singer sends them the bill for their abusive behavior. This song encompasses the struggle of a person stuck in a toxic relationship, trying to keep the relationship going, and the emotional turmoil of the process.
