Portugal. The Man centered on frontman John Gourley’s abstract musical approach and corresponding upbringing. He was raised in a sort of technological isolation: his log cabin home in the winter wasteland of the fringes of Wasilla, Alaska was powered by a generator and had no telephone. Both of his parents helped completely immerse him in the unique lifestyle that comes with a land of seasonal darkness and perpetual cold with their jobs as dog sled mushers. Gourley’s innate curiosity and individual spirit combined with a fascination with science fiction and experiences of homelessness create a distinctly transcendent sound that is always open to interpretation and change.

The album's title was inspired by an original 1969 Woodstock music festival ticket stub owned by Gourley's father. It led Gourley to a realization that almost 50 years later, music has the same mission as then – "to comment on societal and political unease." "We worked with so many rad people on this album, but ended up with just the four of us in a basement at 4 a.m. trying to say something that mattered," said Gourley. "Trying to write music that would help people feel they're not alone, even if they're angry or feeling lost." Woodstock was released on June 16, 2017. John Gourley and Zoe Manville married on New Year's Eve 2017.
People Say
Portugal. The Man Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I won't
I'm a president's son
I don't need no soul
All the soldiers say it'll be alright
We may make it through the war
If we make it through the night
"What a lovely day, yeah, we won the war
May have lost a million men but we've got a million more"
All the people, they say
Share with me all of your pain, I won't
Share your love, I need all your love
All the soldiers say it'll be alright
We may make it through the war
If we make it through the night
All the people, they say
"What a lovely day, yeah, we won the war
May have lost a million men but we've got a million more"
All the people, they say
Can't save me, I can't be saved, I won't
I don't need no love, I'm a president's son
All the soldiers say it'll be alright
We may make it through the war
If we make it through the night
All the people, they say
"What a lovely day, yeah, we won the war
May have lost a million men but we've got a million more"
All the people, they say
And all the people, they say
It'll be alright, it'll be alright
It'll be right now
It'll be alright, it'll be alright
It'll be right now
It'll be alright, it'll be alright
It'll be right now
All the people, they say
The lyrics to “People Say” by Portugal. The Man is a commentary on the state of the world, both in terms of war and the human condition. The singer of the song is a privileged individual, the son of a president, who believes that he doesn't require things that other people need, such as love or a soul. He's also looking for someone to share their pain with him but is quick to clarify that he is not willing to reciprocate. The soldiers in the song are telling the people that they will make it through the war together, emphasizing the sense of unity that can be found amidst chaos. The people, meanwhile, believe that everything is going to be alright and that they've got all the resources they need to succeed, even though they may have lost many people along the way.
The repeated use of the phrase "All the people, they say" is a means of emphasizing how society can sometimes claim to have all the answers, despite the overwhelming amount of uncertainty and chaos in the world. Meanwhile, the song's protagonist has an inward journey occurring as he learns that he can't survive on his own and that he needs love and support despite believing otherwise. His realization occurs in contrast to society's blind optimism, which is implied to be dangerous in its own way.
Overall, "People Say" explores that even the most privileged people in society need love and support to survive, and society's optimism can sometimes be misguided. It emphasizes the resilience of the human spirit and our ability to say that "it'll be alright" in the midst of turmoil.

@Dr_Shmoopz
I was in a car accident after one of your concerts in 2010 and this was the song that helped me recover. "We may make it through the war, if we make it through the night," meant so much to me. Even now I need this song to get over the death of my best friend. So thank you for touching my life for 14 years now ♡
