So American
Portugal. The Man Lyrics

If pain was a color to paint on you
Your heart would be the color blue
Be a gradient from there Until your body met your hair
Which remained a silver

You are the one they call Jesus Christ
Who didn't know no rock n' roll
Just a mission, and a gun to paint rainbows in Vietnam
And a heart that always told you
There's madness in us all
There's madness in us all

So, who wrote the rules?
Who wrote the rules, who wrote the rules?

They said, every one of you will never try to lend a hand
When the police men don't understand
Boys, all you boys, you think it's so American
Girls, all you girls, yeah, you're so American

He may not be born of this land
But he was born of this world
He was born of all the mothers and the colors of our brothers
And the love that was started

You are the one they call Jesus Christ
Who may not know no rock n' roll
And there may not be a Heaven
Or a place of which to send you
But you know in the end

There's madness in us all
There's madness in us all
There's madness in us all
There's madness in us all

So, who wrote the rules?
Who wrote the rules, who wrote the rules?

They said, every one of you will never try to lend a hand
When the police men don't understand
Boys, all you boys, you think it's so American
Girls, all you girls, yeah, you're so American

There's two eyes for every one of us
But somebody got there first and took them all
There's two eyes for every one of us
But somebody got there first and took them all

Man, oh man, you think it's so American
Man, oh man, yeah, you're so American
Man, oh man, you think it's so American
Man, oh man, yeah, you're so American

There's two eyes for every one of us
But somebody got there first and took them all
There's two eyes for every one of us
But somebody got there first and took them all

This song has never been more on point.

Google made me do it

@Miles Schmidt I saw them touring with this album together with Black Keys, and honest to God, this song really hit home. In Belgium, we really like to believe we live in some kind of mini-America. Our history with England and the influences of Hollywood cinéma on our culture are so prevalent most of us don't even notice it anymore. This song feels ironic, teasing anyone who wants to live the American Dream, forsaking their values, hell even the ones pretending they are defending their native culture and what they're actually defending is plain American values, was just like a bang in my head man.

In Belgium, some people are more up to date with what is alive and happening in America when it comes to culture than their own backyard and will use American culture as a measure to define what's good and what sucks. I know alot of people's musical taste is American. Rarely do they care about local musicians because they think it's boring and American music is just mainstream. Even the younger generation, who is interested in history and seems to care about creating a multicultural European identity, tend to avoid Dutch songs because there is an unspoken rule that being proud of our tongue is reserved for right-wing nationalists and will reflect whatever is trending in USA when it comes to fashion, art,...
Most of our bands sing in English, because both British and American audiences love Belgian music because our artists know how to emulate those sounds so well. It's a very interesting topic to keep in mind and I'm glad there is a song out there that expresses this weird misplacement of values within our own culture.
I'm pretty sure we aren't the only country on the globe where this is an actual thing and just like this song is critical of American Patriotism, we too should be critical how far the Eagle's shadow creeps.

I'm not saying America is bad, far from it, but there is a difference between appreciating a culture and plainly trying to assimilate it at the expense of the native culture.

@Miles Schmidt, sorry bout that.

@deineomma90 My original reply got deleted due to YouTube rules. Even tho it was a joke. Censorship is lame too, when the intent is to make people laugh. Shit happens I guess. Good night/morning.

Miles Schmidt

@deineomma90 This shit's lame, compared to their first two albums/It's Complicated Being A Wizard. Pretty sure that was summarized in my first comment. Just my opinion.

deineomma90

@Miles Schmidt, what do you want to tell us..?!
