Portugal. The Man centered on frontman John Gourley’s abstract musical approach and corresponding upbringing. He was raised in a sort of technological isolation: his log cabin home in the winter wasteland of the fringes of Wasilla, Alaska was powered by a generator and had no telephone. Both of his parents helped completely immerse him in the unique lifestyle that comes with a land of seasonal darkness and perpetual cold with their jobs as dog sled mushers. Gourley’s innate curiosity and individual spirit combined with a fascination with science fiction and experiences of homelessness create a distinctly transcendent sound that is always open to interpretation and change.

The album's title was inspired by an original 1969 Woodstock music festival ticket stub owned by Gourley's father. It led Gourley to a realization that almost 50 years later, music has the same mission as then – "to comment on societal and political unease." "We worked with so many rad people on this album, but ended up with just the four of us in a basement at 4 a.m. trying to say something that mattered," said Gourley. "Trying to write music that would help people feel they're not alone, even if they're angry or feeling lost." Woodstock was released on June 16, 2017. John Gourley and Zoe Manville married on New Year's Eve 2017.

Portugal. The Man Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We know what you're gonna do when you get there
Sit down and listen
And it's a cold hearted fool and on that shit we made money
Motives lost in a heap 'cause the dead don't, dead don't listen
Wake up, wake up
Oh, that sunshine is shining in, shining
Wake up, wake up
Oh, that sunshine is shining in, shining
Let's go, I don't care who knows it
I'm an apple dripping man
Just like the feet that tapped, "Take me home"
We'll be back when the stores are in order
The house isn't shaking
The king is elected from the love that grows it, love that grows it
Wake up, wake up
Oh, that sunshine is shining in, shining
Let's go, I don't care who knows it
Wake up, wake up
Oh, that sunshine is shining in, shining
Let's go, I don't care who knows it
I'm an apple dripping man
Just like the feet that tapped, "Take me home"
We built the mountains to stand up where he knows
All the sheep that showed don't care who knows it, care who knows it
But the sons are the giants built by the pharaohs
All the apples fed them sheep
We built the mountains to stand up where he knows
All the sheep that showed don't care who knows it, care who knows it
Care who knows it, care who knows it
Wake up, wake up
Oh, that sunshine is shining in, shining
Let's go, I don't care who knows it
Wake up, wake up
Oh, that sunshine is shining in, shining
Let's go, I don't care who knows it
Wake up, wake up
Oh, that sunshine is shining in
Let's go, I don't care who knows it
Wake up, wake up
Oh, that sunshine is shining in
Let's go, I don't care who knows it
I'm an apple dripping man
Just like the feet that tapped, "Take me home"
The song "Dawn" by Portugal. The Man is an introspective piece that talks about a sense of directionlessness and being lost. The opening lines "Because it's safe at the bottom this lake / We know what you're gonna do when you get there" suggests that the singer is at a point where they feel secure and comfortable, but it also implies that this sense of security might be a hindrance to progress. The following lines, "We built that cold-hearted fool and on that shit we made money / Motives lost in a heap because the dead don't, dead don't listen" suggests that even if they built something, the motives behind it were lost in the process, and it's now just empty and meaningless, perhaps even harmful.
The chorus, "Wake up, wake up / Oh, that sunshine is shining in, shining / Let's go, I don't care who knows it / I'm an apple dripping man / Just like the feet that tapped: 'Take me home'" suggests a yearning for change and the motivation to start something new. The lines "We'll be back when the stores are in order / The house isn't shaking / And the king is elected from the love that grows it / Love that grows it" implies a sense of hope for the future, an ideal situation where everything is in order and a king is elected through love, rather than power.
In the latter half of the song, the lines "We built the mountains to stand up where he knows / All the sheep that showed don't care who knows it, care who knows it / But the sons are the giants built by the Pharaohs / Where the apples fed them sheep" suggest that the singers may have already achieved something great, but it was for the wrong reasons, and the true giants are those built by those who are not selfish.
