The very first Postcards From Mars song was born on a meadow, in the summer of 2011. After a couple of years of writing and releasing 4 digital EP's into the world, Bart decided that it was time to make something more tangible. Working with a small team of creative friends and musicians, Bart managed to record and release the first Postcards From Mars record in entirely independent. The result is a beautiful 12" vinyl with a collection of eleven personal songs about growing older, holding onto love, longing to travel and choosing who you want to be. First single 'Breathe' is accompanied by a moody music video, which was added to the MTV Brand New rotation in April.
Challenging himself to explore unknown territory with his guitar and writing songs along the way has been the main drive behind the debut album called 'Growth'. Bart feels that the change of scenery, driving down long empty roads and facing the most impressive views in nature influenced the overall feel of the record a lot. The sound can be compared to Patrick Watson, Paul Simon and Death Cab For Cutie. Inspired by his travels, Bart dreams to take his music abroad and play for an international audience.
After a three month tour throughout the Netherlands with 16 Popronde shows and a summer filled with festival gigs and a couple of nice support shows, Postcards From Mars has built a strong and dynamic live set. A 6-piece band accompanies Bart on stage. Debut album 'Growth' was released on April 7 2016, accompanied by a release show in EKKO, Utrecht. The album received loving words and was #1 on the 3voor12 Luisterpaal for a week.
In 2016, Bart also worked with Scotch & Soda to create brand songs for their New York Fashion Week show, performing them live during their presentation show in NYC.
Into the Unknown
Postcards From Mars Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Bursting sand in a trench on a dune
Falling when it's unforeseen
Like the sound of a popping balloon
Before you know the ice has grown
Every step is a risk on it's own
When you sink you'll be sinking alone into the unknown
Father, where are you, father?
Striking sticks to the bricks of the room
Maybe I don't deserve this but give me sparks to dispel all the gloom
Before you know
Your clothes outgrown
Every step is a step on your own
Every crack is a chill to the bone
When you sink you'll be sinking alone into the unknown
Before it leaves me numb
Let's build a bridge to calm
Try to outrun and let us overcome
The lyrics of Postcards From Mars's song Into the Unknown, talk about the feeling of falling into the unknown without any warning, much like falling into a trench on a dune and being met with bursting sand. The sensation is compared with the sound of a popping balloon, something sudden and unpredictable. The lyrics express a sense of fear, warning how dangerous it can be to walk on ice that's seemingly grown without warning. Each step taken could be potentially disastrous, and every crack could send a chill to the bone. The singer warns that if one sinks into the unknown, they will be "sinking alone."
The song takes an interesting turn as the singer starts speaking about their father and calls out to him, asking where he is. The singer, wanting to dispel the gloom, requests sparks that will light up the room. The lyrics then take us back to the initial feeling of sinking alone into the unknown, and the singer wants to build a bridge to calm the sensation and overcome the feeling of numbness. In essence, the singer is seeking guidance in the face of the unknown, drawing strength from a father figure and attempting to build a bridge to cross the treacherous terrain.
