TRAIN
Potter Chris Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Been on a train, baby did you hear the whistle blow?
Been on a train north, baby did you hear the whistle blow?
I saw a man, take a needle full of hard drug and die slow
Been on a train and I'm never gonna be the same

There's a bright light in the north wind, gonna bring you home
Mister there's a bright light in the north wind, it's gonna bring you home
He said, "Sweet darling woman, leave me alone"
Been on a train and I'm never gonna be the same

You got more tracks on you baby than the tracks of this train
You got no guts, no gospel and you got no brain
He said, "I got just one thing, gonna soothe my pain"
No, no, damn you Mister and I dragged him out the door
No, no, damn you Mister and I dragged him out the door

He died in the morning sun and I ain't going north no more
I suspect there's a train going north in a month or two
I still hear his words he said, "There's nothing left to say or do"

But Mister you were wrong and I'm gonna sing my song for you
Been on a train and I'm never gonna be the same

Overall Meaning

In Potter Chris's song "Train," the lyrics tell a story of a journey on a train and the events that unfold during this journey. It starts with the singer questioning if their fellow passengers have heard the train whistle blow. They then witness a man inject himself with a hard drug and pass away slowly, leaving a lasting impact on the singer. As the train continues, the singer sees a bright light in the north wind that is said to bring someone home. However, when they approach this individual for help, they are told to be left alone. The singer then has a confrontation with this individual as they mock and insult them, but the singer ultimately drags them out the door. The song concludes with the singer reflecting on the events and declaring that they will never be the same again.

The lyrics of "Train" are intentionally ambiguous and open to interpretation. Some listeners believe that the train journey could represent a metaphor for life and that the events described represent the struggles and challenges one may face along the way. Others view the lyrics as a commentary on addiction, with the singer witnessing the destructive path of a drug user and ultimately taking action to protect themselves.

Another mind blowing Potter solo and great band performance.

@SidLaw500

Adam Rogers has an amazing solo--one of most distinct and original "voices' on the electric guitar.

@rembeadgc

This is a killer tune. I love it from the first notes. It comes from somewhere and goes somewhere instead of just dropping you in the middle. That's what makes life interesting...the journey...night to day, peace and calm to frenzy, etc. I'm havin it.

@amandamiller4145

This will always be one of my favourite tunes to listen to. Also - the solos are absolutely stunning. It's like listening to a painting.

@shaneknox

6:30 onward is outrageous! This album is my favorite thing Chris Potter's ever done... The solo on Train is possibly my favorite sax solo ever. God I wish he'd do another live album with Underground. Studio recordings are great, but there's nothing like their balls-out live shows.

The lord almighty bestowed to us this song. And it was good.
