The clear-air strikes at 0:27 and the flash at 2:16 were positive strokes.

They can be recognized by their single strokes with long continuing current, i.e. the bolt stays lit after it connects and then fades away.

They can also be recognized by their smooth channels-- the 2:16 flash is a great example.

On still photos, look for an abrupt cutoff of side-branches with lower extent. No branching at all also indicates positive polarity.

And finally, just because a lightning bolt strikes far away from rainfall or from the top of a storm cloud doesn't mean it's positive. Most "bolt-from-the-blue" strikes are actually negative!

Hank, I used to be a storm chaser back in college and I have seen ball lightning. In May 2009 I was sleeping in on the last day before finals. I awoke around 9am to tornado sirens. The tornado sirens were for extremely high, tornado-strength winds associated with a derecho that was moving through the Ozarks. I ran into the living room of my apartment and the wind was so strong it was blasting water around the edges of my sliding door, spraying the entire room. It was then that I saw it. It was like an orb of undulating energy waves. You could see the edges of it vibrating slowly and it looked like plasma. It was totally unreal and filled me with awe. It was a golden white color, like I was staring into a giant sparkler that was collapsing in on itself. I can't tell you how difficult it is to describe, much less describe it accurately. I estimated it was fairly close since the visibility was so low from the heavy rain, probably a quarter mile, and maybe 500 feet off the ground moving mostly towards me but slightly to the left. It only lasted maybe 10 seconds, but it felt like an eternity. I grabbed my camera off the couch which was, at the time, a Canon 40D, but was unable to get a photo because the compact flash card was not in the camera. I will always remember that for the rest of my life, and I always keep a fresh SD card in my new camera today (it has two slots) and try to keep it on my nightstand so I can quickly grab it. But I don't expect I'll ever see that again as long as I live. It's one of those personal experiences that changes you on some level.

I know my words mean nothing to you, but I swear upon them. I even looked up flight arrival and departure times for the regional airport, which is well north, and there was nothing coming in during that time. It would also be crazy for a plane to try to land during a derecho, or any aircraft to be out in that. It is among the top craziest storms that I have personally witnessed. I eventually gave up chasing when I was nearly hit by a rain wrapped tornado in the Ozarks. A couple years after that I was getting the itch to chase again. Conditions were highly favorable towards western Missouri near Oklahoma. I was gearing up to go but had a bad feeling about it and chickened out. That storm ended up hitting Joplin, MO and you know the rest. I took that as a sign that I wasn't cut out for chasing and gave it up for good. Anyway, just wanted you to know that ball lightning is for sure a real phenomenon, just extremely rare and short lived.

I believe I saw ball lightning once (Quite a while after I saw this video too).
I went for a walk right before this massive storm entered my town, I was constantly looking up at the clouds to see if the lightning was getting closer, which it was, so I kept a reasonable pace (basically jogging). I quickly looked up to check the sky, when I noticed a small glowing ball drop straight out of the clouds, and hit the ground a block away from me. It didn’t make a sound when it hit.
At that point I thought ‘screw this!’ And I sprinted home.
It’s safe to say I always check the weather radar if I think a storm is around now.
(P.s. This was in Aus)

When I was a kid, I was coming home with my Dad, and his friend. We were miles from town, but we saw the lightning hit the ground. We thought it hit our TV antenna, but it hit the neighbor's tree, splitting it in half. Almost 40 years later, I can still see that bolt!

I absolutely love this channel. I did a report on tornados when I was in the 7th grade. I’m now 68 so that was almost before electricity was discovered. Haha. Your variety of information, calm demeanor and wicked sense of humor is unmatched by any other doing this type of work. I watched others but often interpersonal strife was too distracting. (TIV) And another was pretty good but I couldn’t take the screaming’Back Up’ when the driver was doing that already. (Dominator) I know I didn’t give enough clues for identifying some of those others but I’m just mean like that. 🤣😇

In high school my friend and I would chase storms up in Montana. One of the greatest things we ever saw was gigantic symmetrical lightning. Like a Rorschach test kind of thing. It wasn’t just once either but many strikes that had a mirror image in that storm. It was so intense and beautiful, I will never forget it. I’ve tried looking it up multiple times over the years and have never been able to find anything about it. Just a once in a lifetime kind of thing, I guess. Has anyone else experienced this?

A lot of people have seen ball lighting, but it's still extremely rare. I knew a retired airlines pilot who said that it formed on the nose of the airplane and slowly move down the inside all the way to the back. It's probably come complicated form of static electricity.

Hank, ball lightning tortured me when I was 3 and 4. My parents live in a very old house and it had a tree scraping the wire that connected the house to the power lines. There were many huge storms in the summer and one night something glowing was rolling around the metal frame on my canopy bed. I was terrified. Then one night I was in the bath and one of those ball things came out of the bathroom light fixture and went into the hallway phone, killing it. My dad saw it too. I think a few more floated around my room and I ran screaming into my parents room. Eventually they cut the tree and it stopped. I had nightmares about the things attacking me for like a year.

My great grandparents, grandparents, my mom, and aunt witnessed ball lighting "float" as you said right through their house. My great grandmother had a small cottage and all were staying there for the summer. One extremely hot summer day, a thunderstorm came in off the water as they usually did and while all were sitting in the living room, one of those ball things went in the front door and out the back.

This wasn't a one person saw it because everyone recounted the same story with absolute consistency right up until they all passed away including my mom who passed in 2018. For years afterwards, my great grandmother would lock the doors, pull the shades, and sit in a corner in the dark and wait out a storm as it passed by.

I absolutely LOVE thunderstorms! I caught a picture of a lightning bolt last year that made a perfect heart at the bottom of the bolt! When I went back and looked through my pictures and videos of that storm was when I saw it..... I couldn't believe it, and its beautiful! Once in a lifetime to see something like that! ....My mom passed away a few years ago and we would sit up at night watching the storms. We use to get so excited when we knew a thunderstorm was coming. So when I saw that full heart made by a bolt of lightning I just about broke down in tears. I truly felt like that was her way of saying that shes still here watching these storms with me. 💞 So now I watch every single thunderstorm that comes by. No matter what time of night it is, so if I hear it and it wakes me up at 3:30am from my sleep, I will always be ok with that. So I will go to my window and watch the entire storm, or ill go out on my porch if its not down pouring to bad. I havent missed one in years! After summer goes by, I patiently wait for spring to come, knowing I'll be waiting for that first good storm to come. I will cherish every one, knowing my mom is watching it with me, but just from up above. With all of the love and bond I had with my mother for these storms, I have now passed them down to my own daughter. My daughter may be little but she gets just as excited as I do when I tell her a thunderstorm is coming. Even though my little girl has never met my mom, she definitely knows that her gigi in the sky loves these thunderstorms to. 💖

I saw ball lightning when I was a little kid. It came out of a thunderhead several miles away and floated down diagonally toward where I was at. I was sitting on the steps of the front porch. All I could do is watch it coming. I feel like it woulda hit me if it didn't run into the across the street neighbor's transformer and explode.

It was just a real bright "cool white" flickering ball. From beginning to end the whole thing must have lasted about 2 minutes. I hope I never forget that experience. Cause it sure was awesome.

@You know nothing of the crunch! That's a very good way to describe how I feel when graced with anything from a raccoon crossing my path to seeing strange sightings in the sky. It's a sense of reverence and humility.

At the time of seeing mine though I was very young, it didn't last that long and it kind of sucked me in, like I had to just watch it.. Not to mention the only camera I had was one of those black, folding kodak instant print flash cameras(potato camera 2.0) and my mom used to have to hide it from me, so I never woulda found it in time for anything.

I haven’t seen ball lightning but I’ve seen other things. Honestly there’s no logical way to explain this but here goes. At the time I felt it would be disrespectful just to whip out my iphone and start recording. I saw ball lightning once, I've never seen anything like it in my life. It haunts me to this day. I had a camera phone in my pocket but I was too terrified to move. It just floated really slowly and it was dead silent. It passed slowly over a friend and me. We couldn't talk for almost a minute after it had passed over us. It's that scary to see something that breaks your mind trying to understand what it's looking at.

About a month ago, Los Angeles, the city I live in, experienced a rare severe thunderstorm with an epic lightning show. There was constant cloud to ground lightning with two or three anvil crawlers. The storm caught several people off guard with a sudden burst of heavy rain and pea sized hail.

Saw ball lightning once as a kid - during a thunderstorm it came in somewhere through the living room, "rolled" across the ceiling, and then exited through the front wall of the house. One of the oddest things I've ever seen and I highly doubt anyone will EVER get a picture of it in the wild...

Not only do I live in the Lightning Capitol of the US, but they call my particular area "lightning alley". It's something you never get totally used to but the real close ones (I call them sizzlers because that's the first sound you hear when you see the flash} really freak me out. I wear earbuds during those storms...lessons the anxiety...slightly 🌩😳

I remember last year in Mesa, AZ, on a hot evening during a power outage of a few hours in length. My neighbor Bart and I were sitting under his patio watching the lightning and saw the strangest one our entire lives. It came from a single spot and opened up vertically branching out like a spider web filling the whole southern sky with lightning bolts; with that the power immediately came on.

I was at Bear Lake (Utah/Idaho) During a major thunderstorm. I was camping and had been hearing the lightning all day, but assumed it was moving away from us. When we got to the lake, I noticed there was a thunderstorm in Montpelier Idaho (13 miles from the lake) but didn't think much of it.

The wind that day was incredible, the waves were about 5 ft tall at times. Eventually we decided we were done swimming and decided to head back to camp. As were leaving a couple high schoolers came and asked us for help since there car had died; and wanted us to jump it. We agreed and drove over to their car. As my friend is helping them jump it, I noticed it had started to lightly rain, and within mere seconds it was a complete downpour. My friend managed to jump their car (They were driving a sedan, we were driving an SUV), and got back in the car and was dripping wet. The rain was so heavy we feared it was going to break our window (These weren't small drops of rain, rather huge pieces that were painful when they hit you). We started driving away, with the sedan behind us; we were about to leave the beach when I noticed they got stuck in the sand and we had to drive back and help them once-again. They managed to get off the beach and drove away.

We parked on the side of the road since visibility was near 0. I looked back at the beach and there was massive RV's stuck in the sand, and jet skis that had been abandoned being thrown around in the water. We were parked next to a bunch of powerlines, and I noticed blue plasma running up and down them, and a transformer which we had previously not noticed exploded just behind us. Everyone screamed bloody murder as we sped away. We got back to camp, being traumatized from the storm decided to leave early (We were only going to stay one more day anyway). That storm was the craziest weather I had ever been in, and we still joke about it saying: "Were never going back there again or Zeus is going to punish us!"

A few years ago I was flying from Houston to Oklahoma City. We had to fly around a large storm system that put on quite a lightning show. A we descended on our approach to the airport I was watching several spectacular lightning strikes around a small town. One large strike produced what looked like a “smoke ring” of lightning that appeared to rise up from the point of the lightning strike. It was brief and looked like an effect I’ve seen in film of Van deGraf (?) generators of a donut shaped discharge. I have never seen anything like it before or since.

You're more likely to see a watersprout, than to be struck by lightning. If you WERE hit by lightning, you would have a small black out. I mean, I've watched many videos of people getting struck by lightning, and the worst I've seen, didn't cause the victim to die. Honestly. ._.

A close friend of mine and her sister experienced ball lightening when they were kids. It followed them up their stairs in their house and scared them to death! Their dad, who is a fireman, saw it, too, along with her other siblings. It was in Wyoming in the early 80's. It definitely does exist.

Read something about a few new photos taken in the Sahara of ball lightning said to be approx 5 ft in diameter and lasted seconds in the same area. This new research indicates that it could have something to do with the combustion of silicon (sand) as the spectral lines indicated this..

I remember somewhere on TV (it was either Discovery or National Geographic, anyway something rather legit) they were doing an experiment to actually create ball lightning, and they kinda managed to do it - the discharge was little electric balls that rolled around the tray for a fraction of a second. So I think it is possible, it's just so rare that you can't really prepare yourself to photograph it.

I've witnessed a very similar storm over Fish Lake Beach in Volo, IL. I could never quite describe it to anyone who hasn't seen it but I still try. It wasn't never ending but the lightning never stopped during the night. The lighting would trickle and flash non-stop with ball lightning and also dome lightning which was amazing to see. The dome lightning baffled me since it was like a turquoise green color and shot up from the ground, it was like some energy grenade went off or something.

@Chrystal Downs I remember when there was a tornado up North from me at around 12:00am. And for an hour all we had was a lightning show. And then the flashes kept getting brighter and brighter, and the wind started to pick up. I legit thought we were about to get hit by a tornado at 2:00am. But it dissipated before it got to us and all we got was an awesome light show

It happened when I was 10 in DC, but I saw a lightning ball for sure. It was almost as if it instead of going towards the ground, did multiple circles around one spot to create a spiraled mess or lightning. One of the coolest things i've ever seen, and I hope that someone will eventually get a video or photo of one.

I saw what seemed like ball lightning before I'd ever heard of it. It was when I was in high school and I'm 52 now. It was basketball size, floating and glowing on a gravel road, and it was so disconcerting that I didn't want to look at it. That feeling of almost embarrassment, like averting your eyes if someone has a wardrobe malfunction. It's hard to explain. But I just kinda looks at it askance and kept walking. My feeling was some fear, but mostly 'I don't have time for this right now.'

Craziest lightening I ever was was on the shore of lake Erie. For at least an hour I sat on the beach while lightening consistently struck Port Burwell. It seemed to strike the same area over and over and it gave off a strobe light effect with its consistency.
I later clued in that it was likely the 50 someodd wind turbines that caused this.

My grandmother told me that back in the 70's lightning hit her TV (prolly through the wires) in her house and a ball of "lightning" (plasma probably) came out of the TV and floated through the living room a bit and then dissipated. She says it was the scariest thing she'd ever experienced.

Hank's a bit of a badass, I have to admit. Maybe it's from my own irrational fear of tornadoes, but I could never see myself doing what he does in such a grand fashion. Speaking of Ball lightning that you mention at the end, I have witnessed it once. I was pretty young, but i remember a powerful electrical storm passing through the area, and being a young kid, it was a little scary. It was night and I was supposed to be in bed, but couldn't sleep, so i was peeking out my window, and saw the glowing orb just floating slowly in the air until it made contact with a telephone pole in the corner of the backyard, and released a bright flash, the loudest crack of thunder Ive ever heard. And of course it knocked out the transformer on the pole and killed power to that little part of our neighborhood. Was in Spokane, WA. in the mid 80's.

Being near a radio tower prior to a thunderstorm (during the Summer), you will notice the "guy wires" that support the tower spark and crack like like sparklers from the static electricity. Saw this for first time when I worked for radio station in Idaho several years ago. Fascinating. But I advice going inside and not be out when the storm hits.

i saw ball lightning one time when i was younger. i was staying at my grandparents' house in pennsylvania and we were watching tv in the living room during a storm. we heard the loudest sound i've ever heard and jumped up to look out the window. a ball of what looked like the sun was rolling down the metal handrail on the stairs outside. it was loud and bright and quite terrifying. you could feel the static in the air for a few moments before it dissipated. it was absolutely insane, and i don't think i'll ever experience something like it again.

Your story about ball lightning agrees with other accounts. What has tripped up scientists for ages is that ball lightning is so short lived that studying it is very difficult.

My own family has a similar story. During the 1940s my mother's family had a farm in Washington state. Lightening struck an outdoor pipe that then apparently followed the course of the plumbing into the kitchen where my grandmother, mother and aunt were all working. A ball of lightening popped out of the faucet, bounced around the sink and then out into the middle of the kitchen and vanished. I asked my family members about this many times over the years and I am convinced that they saw what appeared to be ball lightening.

Because you didn't catch it on film, no one will ever believe you. But, I do. My father, now dead, saw it once, as a child. My father was a very devout Christian. He was also a wonderful story teller, part of the oral tradition of the poor folk of the depression. He would regal us with stories of the people and times of his youth spent struggling to survive during the great depression. He said, once when he was very young and his parents were share croppers, a very bad storm came through their settlement. They had no electricity, so, after night fell, the entire country side was dark except for the lightning strikes. The family had gotten up and gone to the windows as the storm was so intense. One of the strikes was right at a fence line close to the house. After the initial strike, the whole family watched in amazement as a large ball of light then traveled down the length of the barbed wire until it reached a corner post then disappeared. He was about 6 or 7. Until he died, at 87, he never forgot the sight, nor did his siblings. Nor did any of them ever see it repeated. His family numbered 11 at the time and all the kids his age and up told the exact same thing. The two younger ones didn't remember the incident as one was only 4 and the other a toddler. I believe you.

I liked the idea of "panning" the camera to catch multiple strokes in a lightning flash; I'll have to experiment with
that trick this summer. Incidentally, there were cameras that were built specifically for lightning research a century ago
which worked on the same principle; these cameras had two lenses mounted on a rotating plate, with one lens centered and the other one offset, so that the center lens would catch the entire lightning stroke at the center of the frame and the offset lens would then group the individual flashes around the central photo; like so many potatoes arranged around a roast on a serving platter. Since the offset lens rotated at a constant, predetermined speed, the time between the strokes could be
easily measured.

i always watch this when a storm hits my area, like tonight. Lightning at night is sometimes like a good scary movie to me, it scares me to death, especially when I'm trying to sleep! Along with three other witnesses, I observed what I assume was ball lightning last summer. A series of fuzzy, luminous objects swooped from one cloud to another at fairly low altitude, following each other along the same line. We never saw more than three at the same time, with most objects going solo. We thought it was a group of helicopters doing odd maneuvers at first. Conditions were partly cloudy, at dusk. The clouds were low hanging, as they might after a storm, but there was no conventional lightning or rain nearby. We watched these objects for around fifteen minutes. They looked like identical green balls of plasma at least a meter in diameter. We occasionally saw light moving within the clouds, so I'm assuming they didn't fizzle out on contact.

Monday, 6 September 2021 (Labor Day) I, for the very first time saw "ball lightening" (a red upper and orange lower good size orb) in San Antonio, Texas. It was an amazing sight and one I may never see again. I don't know if the temperature of the rain makes a difference, but it was colder than usual (as one who likes to play in the rain I have discovered cold rain may produce hail). The amazement was like when I saw my first "green ball" meteor during a Geminid meteor shower some years back. . .wow. . .how awesome for my bucket list!!!

Speaking of lightning, we had some storms over the area, currently. Now they've quieted down. Long time ago, there was a close lightning strike on the building, (former work place.) I was outside at the time. Sounds like the sky was being torn apart, in the worse way possible. Scared the crap out of me. Also possibly, I had witnessed ball lightning, but only for a few seconds. Still trying to determine what it was.

I had something happen to me that I never heard happening to someone before or maybe they just never said. I was standing on my covered back porch during a heavy thunderstorm. Then suddenly I heard a sizzling sound go up into the air. Then immediately a lightning bolt came down within a few feet of me. It was instantaneous thunder and lightning at the same time. I had a white streak on my right eye for a hour from the lightning. The bolt hit to the right of me while I was looking straight ahead.

I saw ball lightning for the first time last year. I was filming a thunderstorm and it looked like the best of it was over, so of course I stopped the camera. No more than five minutes later, my brother and I watched as a bright ball--maybe the size of a beach ball or as small as a baseball--floated nearby. It was hard to tell size and distance because it was so bright. I was sort of paralyzed, awestruck. The thing blew up just like lightning after maybe ten or fifteen seconds existing as an orb. I'm absolutely pissed that I stopped the camera--the ball would have been visible right in its path. Ugh. That wasn't the only missed opportunity. I also missed lightning striking a barn and setting it on fire. Really, I've learned my lesson. Don't stop recording until the sky is blue.

One of my favorite lightning documentaries has a scientist who, as a teen, saw ball lightning. He and his date had taken shelter in a gazebo, and he said the ball lightning went across the gazebo in front of them and out the other side, making a hissing sound. I really doubt he was making this up. My sister saw something go up the lane on the side of the house we share. Who am I to tell her she's full of it? It happens, IMO. I heard an idea that it might be one of those "beads" breaking loose.

Don't know how I found your channel but it's great fascinating content. Subbed. I've seen ball lightning twice... in roughly the same location in the same week. Conditions were fast-moving low cloud cover. No rain . The balls were glowing faintly orange. similar to a plasma you might generate in your microwave, and they appeared to be moving with the wind. They didn't last more than a couple of seconds so there was no question of getting footage or a photo before they were gone.

i visited the house of someone who had a close-up and personal experience with ball lightning. She narrated it's formation,coming into her house off a metal-framed window, "rolling"off the sash and then rolled along the floor for quite a few feet leaving a scorched melted carpet trail. It then jumped towards an electric outlet and disappeared. The burn scars were certainly consistent with her account, and she was visibly shaken by the incident.

My father was an airline pilot from the 60s-90s. He flew 727s and 747s. He said once early in his career they had ball lightning enter the cabin in flight and roll down the center aisle. He never made up pilot stories and didn't talk much about his flights. So I think it was true.

@cavok84 From my experience, the orange "bead-out" occurs on strokes with continuing current and I think it's as you describe-- the very high heat generated causes visible luminosity after the current flow stops.

There are positive and negative variants of both upward and downward lightning, depending on the sign of charge sent to ground. Upward lightning is almost always negative, meaning that they are upward positive leaders advancing through negative charge and grounding it. Hank even references the smooth channels that the upward positive leaders formed.

Upward positive lightning (negative leaders) is extremely rare from what I know. I've only ever seen one example online-- you can see it in the "upward lightning from tall objects" section on ztresearch.blog/education along with an explanation on why they're so rare.

Really amazing photography, and I appreciate your providing me with some examples. The strike at 2:16 is extremely cool; I'd guess that the orange-ish remnant left after the discharge is the incandescence of the air (what you called bead lightning) due to the high current and extreme heat?

Are you aware if ground to cloud lightning demonstrates this dual nature of polarity (i.e., do you see examples of positive and negative upward lightning?) Thanks again for taking the time to explain!

But seriously... A very interesting video, and one hell of a collection of footage and stills. (Plus, that trick for catching the different flickers is a stroke of genius.) Don't forget those frightening "positive-charge" bolts, either - especially since they can create "sprites" in the upper-atmosphere. Though fat lot of good it does those of us who are on the ground and under said storms...

I'm from Scotland and was on vacation in Orlando, Florida in the early 90's and witnessed ball lightning in a motel room during an electrical storm. It moved across the carpet and up the wall leaving a scorch mark before exploding near the window. Never seen anything like it before or since.

I saw ball lightning once, when I was 19. It slowly descended and then exploded into a bright flash that blinded me for a couple of seconds. I had never heard of ball lightning and had to look it up online much later. Beautiful display of nature, but beware, it is still lethal.
