I Wanna Be Like You
Pow Wow Lyrics

(Richard M. Sherman-Robert B. Sherman)

Now I'm the king of the swingers
Oh, the jungle V.I.P
I've reached the top and had the stop
And that's what botherin' me
I wanna be a man, manclub
And stroll right into town
And be just like the other men
I'm tried of monkeyin' around

Oh, oobee doo
I wanna be like you
I wanna walk like you
Talk like you, too
You'll see it's true
An ape like me
Can learn to be human, too

Now don't try to kid me, manclub
I made a deal with you
What I desire is man's red fire
To make my dreams come true
Give me the secret, manclub
Clue me what to do
Give me the power of man's red flower
So I can be like you

Oh, oobee doo
I wanna be like you
I wanna walk like you
Talk like you, too
You'll see it's true

An ape like me
Can learn to be human, too

Overall Meaning

In "I Wanna Be Like You," Pow Wow sings about the desires of a monkey who has reached the top of the jungle hierarchy and wants to be like the "manclub." The monkey is tired of "monkeying around" and wants to walk and talk like humans. He believes that he can learn to be human, too, by obtaining the "secret" and "power" of man's red flower, which is the fire.

The lyrics suggest the idea that animals want to live like people, but they don't understand that humans have their own problems and struggles. The desire of the monkey is to abandon his own nature and become something he is not, which is quite impossible. The song addresses the concept of identity crisis, the search for one's identity, and the idea of social status as monkeys see humans as superior due to their capability to use fire.
