Who Do You Think You Are
Powerman 5000 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You don't wanna get crippled and cracked
But keep hanging on I'm gonna read the riot act
The truth is the truth a fact is a fact
And once you get gone you ain't coming back

I've head it all before just like and echo
So shut down the lights that's the end of the show
So take it from me it's time to let go
But there's one last thing that I need to know

Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?
I want to know before you gotta go
Who do you think you are?

It's time to relax just pull up a seat
You can't ever win 'cause you can't compete
I've been to every city on every street
I know all the people that you'd like to meet

Simple is the story there's no sub plot
Life ain't a movie it's just a snap shot
You try to do a little 'cause you can't do allot
So tell me again 'cause I just forgot

Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?
I want to know before you gotta go
Who do you think you are?

How does it feel to be one of the crowd?
Locked inside and you're never allowed
The sad truth of a life never lived
Is when it's over you've got nothing to give

(Come on! Alright! Again!)

Well there's one more thing that I need to know

Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?
I want to know before you gotta go
Who do you think you are?

Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?

I want to know before you gotta go
Who do you think you are?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Powerman 5000's song "Who Do You Think You Are?" seem to be a message to someone who is pretending to be someone they are not or trying to hold onto something that isn't real. The singer warns the person that they are going to read the riot act or tell them off. The truth is the truth, and once someone is gone, they can't come back. The singer has heard it all before and suggests that it is time to let go. However, they still ask one last thing: who do you think you are?

The song continues with the singer telling the person to pull up a seat and relax because they can't win or compete. The singer has been to every city and knows all the people the person would like to meet. Life is simple, and there isn't a sub-plot. The person can't do much, so the singer asks the question again: who do you think you are?

The last section of the song seems to be a bit of a rallying cry. How does it feel to be one of the crowd, locked inside and never allowed? The sad truth of a life never lived is that when it's over, you have nothing to give. The song ends with the singer asking one more time: who do you think you are? It's unclear if the person ever answers the question or if they're left to ponder it.

First may I say that this band is freaking epic. Next, I know where your coming from starclaw, because I love to cause that little moment where someone's hopes and/or dreams die, but you are going way out of your way to cause it. And Spike, I can tell you need to calm down. From the few comments I wasn't too lazy to forget about, it seems like you both have gone way too far :3 haha
