Lions In My Own Garden
Prefab Sprout Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, I'm sorry if I go too fast
Tonight, let's pretend that this will last
I've got a dream you would like to sleep until

Oh, I'm sorry to dwell on the past
I'd better say nothing at all
But I've got this friend who thinks he's in love with you
And it doesn't sum it up to say he's singing the blues
And whoever learnt to walk in somebody else's shoes?
He's screaming because he's found something to lose

So you're living in Eden where, apples are good
But every narrow miracle, takes place on Earth
Yeah, some militia have arrived and, the percussion has come
And they're pounding out messages loud on the drum
The rumors have started that we are both young
Lions in my own garden, exit someone

That's what I'll shout when you just stay out of reach
And it doesn't sum it up to say I'm singing the blues
And whoever learnt to walk in somebody else's shoes?
I'm screaming because I've found something to lose

And it doesn't sum it up to say I'm singing the blues
And whoever learnt to walk in somebody else's shoes?
I'm screaming because I've found something to lose

And I'm pounding out messages loud on the drum

The rumors have started that we are both young
Lions in my own garden, exit someone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Lions In My Own Garden" by Prefab Sprout are a mix of apologies, desperation, and unrequited love. The first verse starts with an apology for going too fast in the relationship and suggests that they should pretend that the moment will last forever. The singer then admits to dreaming about the person he is addressing, but acknowledges that dwelling in the past is not healthy. The second verse takes a turn when the singer reveals that he has a friend who is in love with the same person. The friend is struggling to cope with his feelings, and the singer is desperate to show that he is also affected by the situation. In both verses, the singer is trying to convey that he has something to lose, and he is willing to shout out loud to keep it.

The chorus "And it doesn't sum it up to say I'm singing the blues / And whoever learnt to walk in somebody else's shoes?" emphasizes the desperation and confusion of the singer. He is screaming because he has found something to lose, and he can not bear the thought of someone else taking it away from him. The last verse brings in elements of danger and rumors, with mentions of militias and percussion. The singer imagines himself and the other person as young lions in a garden, where they are both at risk of being hunted down. The song ends with the repetition of the phrase "Lions in my own garden, exit someone," which indicates that the singer is still struggling with the situation.

Prefab sprout is fine music anytime , anyplace, I have them all, and glad to say it, have been a fan since the 80s, and still am, I just got the trawling the megahertz from the u.k. I was happy to see it re released again at a good price, paddy and his lyric style really get me, have to read between the lines, and have a laugh at times with a smile. It would be nice to get a good set of acoustic songs from the early days, live it when its paddy and guitar,
