We Let The Stars Go
Prefab Sprout Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There was that girl I used to know
She'd tease me about my name
Fan the embers long enough
I sometimes catch her flame
The soothing voice of distance tells me
"That was just a fling"
Other music fills my ears
But I still hear her sing :
She sings :
Paddy Joe, say Paddy Joe
Don't you remember me ?
How long ago one gorgeous night
We let the stars go
Paddy Joe, say Paddy Joe
Don't you remember me ?
How long ago one gorgeous night
We let the stars go free
There was a boy I used to be
I guess that he was cold
If she came to buy him now
How cheaply he'd be sold
But the light is gone and it is dark
What used to be the sky
Is suddenly embarrassing
To the naked eye

You see :
Paddy Joe, see Paddy Joe
Can't face this memory
How long ago one gorgeous night
We let the stars go
Paddy Joe, see Paddy Joe
Can't face this memory
How long ago one gorgeous night
We let the stars go
Long ago one gorgeous night
We let the stars go
Long ago one stupid night
We let the stars go free
We let the stars go free
We let the stars go free

We let the stars go free
We let the stars go free

Overall Meaning

The song "We Let The Stars Go" by Prefab Sprout seems to be a nostalgic reflection on a past relationship. The lyrics suggest that the singer used to know a girl who would tease him about his name. They had a fling, but it seems to be in the past now. The singer admits that he still thinks of her and can hear her singing the song's chorus, which calls out to "Paddy Joe" and asks him to remember a gorgeous night when they let the stars go free.

There is also a hint of regret in the lyrics, as the singer reflects on a boy he used to be and how he might have sold himself short back then. The light is gone, and it's dark now, and what was once a beautiful sky is now embarrassing to look at. It seems like the singer is struggling to face the memories of this past relationship and the things he might have done differently.

Overall, the song seems to be a bittersweet reflection on past love and lost opportunities. The chorus is catchy and memorable, and the lyrics are poignant and introspective.

We Let The Stars Go

There was a girl I used to know
She'd tease me about my name
Fan the embers long enough,
I sometimes catch her flame
The soothing voice of distance tells me,
That was just a fling
Other music fills my ears,
but I still hear her sing...

She sings,
'Paddy Joe, say Paddy Joe,
Don't you remember me?'  (Ha-a-a-a-aow)
'Long ago one gorgeous night,
We let the stars go.'
'Paddy Joe, say Paddy Joe,
Don't you remember me?'  (Ha-a-a-a-aow)
'Long ago one gorgeous night
We let the stars go free.'

There was a boy I used to be
I guess that he was cold
If she came to buy him now,
How cheaply he'd be sold
But the light is gone and it is dark
What used to be the sky
Is suddenly embarrassing
to the naked eye...

You see Paddy Joe, see Paddy Joe
Can't face this memory (Ha-a-a-a-aow)
Long ago one gorgeous night,
We let the stars go
Paddy Joe, see Paddy Joe
Can't face this memory (Ha-a-a-a-aow)
Long ago one gorgeous night
We let the stars go
Long ago one gorgeous night
We let the stars go
Long ago one stupid night
We let the stars go free
(We let the stars go free)
(We let the stars go free)
We let the stars go free
We let the stars go free

What a songwriter. Criminally under-rated.

Some more recent indie artists took influence from them at least.

It's quite an achievement in anybody's universe to write such an achingly beautiful song such as this. Paddy is a genius we all know it. The melody, the words, the chords all just fit together perfectly. I've loved this song since the moment i first heard it upon release all those years ago.. thanks paddy
