The band frequently faced controversy over their original name, involving accusations of both racism and cultural appropriation because of the name's association with the original Vietnamese Viet Cong. In March 2015, the band was set to perform at Oberlin College, but the show was canceled due to their "offensive name".
In September 2015, the band announced that they were going to change their name: "We are a band who wants to make music and play our music for our fans. We are not here to cause pain or remind people of atrocities of the past". On March 29, 2016, the Canadian music magazine Exclaim! reported that the band were still booking shows under the name Viet Cong, and began running a real-time "Days since Viet Cong promised to change their name" counter on the magazine's website.
On April 21, 2016, Flegel announced in a Pitchfork interview that the band would henceforth be performing and recording under the name "Preoccupations".

Burning currency in bonfires
There's no why
And are you passengers approved, time kill is giving you too much to lose soon
With a dominance on narcissism in the metasphere setting concrete
Ill-affected by significant destruction, might as well be catastrophic, catastrophic
Bending lies, disgust
Trying to untangle the map
Everything slips right through your shaking hands
Whether we ask for it or not
To live is to suffer again and again
Take the time to catch your breath
You're at a loss, you have no thoughts
No dialogue between yourself
And an intelligent objective
Bending lies, despised
Bleeding behind, the protection of the veil
Bending lies, despised
Hiding behind, the tipping of the scales
Trying to untangle the map
Everything slips right through your shaking hands
Whether we ask for it or not
To live is to suffer again and again

The lyrics to Preoccupations' "Antidote" convey a sense of confusion, anxiety, and unease in a world that seems to be increasingly dominated by technology and information. The first few lines reference the destruction and burning of currency, perhaps implying a loss of value or meaning in our economic systems. The line "There's no why" further emphasizes the sense of meaninglessness and lack of purpose in our current society. The reference to "passengers approved" also suggests the feeling of being trapped or controlled by outside forces.
The second verse suggests a desire to make sense of this chaos and confusion, to "untangle the map," but ultimately feeling like everything is slipping through one's grasp. The repeated phrase "To live is to suffer again and again" suggests a sense of resignation, as if the struggles of life are an inevitable part of existence. The chorus with its references to "bending lies" and "the protection of the veil" suggests a sense of deception or hidden motives at play in our society.
The final verse returns to the theme of information overload, suggesting a need for an "antidote" to the constant barrage of data and stimuli that we are subjected to. The lines "under a microscope" and "uneven ratios" further emphasize the sense of scrutiny and judgment that we are constantly under. Overall, "Antidote" paints a bleak picture of the modern world, but also suggests a glimmer of hope in the search for a way out.

I saw preoccupations in Fredericton New Brunswick CA, the sounds they make live are insane. I felt as though I was stuck in a trance and it was beautiful. Got to go back to an apartment with them and they are really interesting people!

Am I the only one that likes the New-Wave direction? I love Women and early iterations of VC but this is cool af. I bet the live show is an entirely different beast with this sound too.

I don't think there's a song on New Material that better represents its core than Antidote: it has a catchy melody but is also industrial and mechanical, and you can't tell what the instruments are
