Coming together in 1991, during the No More Tours supposed-retirement tour for Ozzy's No More Tears, the band was originally named Lynyrd Skynhead and included the former White Lion rhythm section of bassist James LoMenzo and drummer Greg D'Angelo alongside Wylde. Although credited solely as 'Zakk Wylde' solo tracks, this line-up actually released two individual recordings; a raucous Southern instrumental entitled "Farm Fiddlin'" on a compilation called Guitars That Rule the World (1991) and a cover of the blues-standard "Baby Please Don't Go" on the first L.A. Blues Authority compilation (1992).
In early 1994 D'Angelo was replaced by Brian Tichy, this was at the same time that the band changed their name to Pride & Glory, and by May released their self-titled debut - and only - album, on Geffen Records. In June of that year, the band performed as a main stage act at the Donington Monsters of Rock Festival in England. In November 1994 LoMenzo left after their tour of Japan, 3 days before the beginning of their US Tour. Zakk managed to find a replacement for James in his long time friend John 'J.D.' DeServio (Drill). The band played their last show on December 10th 1994 in Los Angeles in which Slash, guitarist of popular rock band Guns N' Roses (also signed to Geffen Records) played the songs Voodoo Child and Red House with the band. On January 31, 1998, the original Pride & Glory band reunited for a one-off reunion show at the Whiskey in Hollywood, CA. This momentous occasion was believed to be bootlegged, but no video has turned up anywhere.

I nearly lost my mind
Nearly lost you babe
I think about you child
Through my sick and twisted smile
I nearly lost you babe
Shakin' in my hands
I nearly lost ya mama
Lovin' just to hate
A war that just won't wait
I nearly lost ya babe
My eyes have gone blind
Oh, the past I just can't find
A flower to be saved
A flower for your grave
Mama at times I just don't know
Oh, sweet Jesus, where'd I go?
What it was to be
Was kinda clear to see
Nearly lost ya babe
There ain't no backin' down
'Cause I ain't nobody's clown
I nearly lost you mama
Breakin' down inside, yeah
I nearly lost you babe
Forever one more time
Until the day I die
I nearly lost ya babe
My eyes have gone blind
Oh, the past I just can't find
A flower to be saved
A flower for your grave
Though I just don't know
Oh, sweet Jesus, where'd I go?
Where'd I go?
Oh, yeah
Oh, my eyes, they have gone blind
The past I just can't find, oh
Flower to be saved
A flower for your grave
Mama, I just don't know
Oh, sweet Jesus, where'd I go?
The lyrics of "Sweet Jesus" by Pride & Glory refer to a relationship that almost ended catastrophically. In the first verse, the singer talks about how he nearly lost his mind and his partner, and how he still thinks about her despite the pain that she caused him. He describes his hands shaking and his confusion about why this war between them keeps going on. He also acknowledges that he doesn't always know what to do or where he's going, which is further exemplified in the chorus when he cries out to "sweet Jesus" for some kind of guidance or answers.
As the song progresses, the singer continues to describe the near-loss of this relationship, using imagery of blindness and death to convey the seriousness of the situation. He mentions a flower that could have been saved but instead will be used for the partner's grave, underscoring the fact that this relationship was close to ending in tragedy. Despite this, the singer seems to have a newfound appreciation for what he has with his partner and vows to never let her slip away again.
Overall, "Sweet Jesus" is a poignant and introspective song about the fragility of relationships and the importance of cherishing those we love. It's a reminder that even the strongest of bonds can be broken if we're not careful, and that sometimes we need to ask for help from a higher power to guide us through the difficult times.

Reminds me of late husband...he’s the one who introduced me to Zakk Wylde even though I’d listened to him for years without knowing who he was. This was our song and he wanted it played at his funeral but I told him to pick something else so I could still listen to Sweet Jesus with a smile. He chose Tuesday’s Gone by Lynyrd Skynryd
