Pride and Fall came into being when Sigve and Svein wanted to pursue a more electronic and club-oriented sound than what they were doing in their goth/darkwave project An Evening With Kisses. As a result, Per Waagen, an old friend joined Pride and Fall as a programmer and keyboard player.
They released a demo shortly after, and in 2003, released their debut album, Nephesh, and debut single Paragon on Dependent Records in Europe, Metropolis Records in the United States, and Memento Materia in Scandinavia. Pride and Fall performed their first gigs outside of Norway in 2004, including Cyberia/X-Club in Holland, the Invitation Festival in Belgium and the Dark City Festival in Scotland.
In late 2005, the band released their second single, the web-only release Border, and in 2006, their second album Elements of Silence. Along with Revolution By Night the band toured Britain in May 2006, supporting Covenant on their UK Skyshaper tour. Pride and Fall released their 3rd album, In My Time of Dying, on 17 August 2007, their final album on Dependent Records. Their also played the Festival kinetic 2.0 in Canada 17 May 2008.
After a break the band returned on Dependence 2012 with the song Reborn, and a new album were released 30 August 2013.
Beginning with influences of metal, goth and progressive trance, Pride and Fall came together to combine the distinct and contrasting elements of these genres into something never heard before to spawn a refreshing and innovative surprise for the listener. Hailing from Norway, vocalist Sigve Monsen along with Per Waagen and Svein Joar Auglaend Johnsen have been dredging the depths of electronic music for fresh ideas since 2000. With the first album, Nephesh, Pride and Fall had created a new and innovative sound in the world of Futurepop. They further explored this sound in the follow up album Elements of Silence. The third album from the band, 2007’s In My Time Of Dying, was recorded following a year marked by divorce, a friend's suicide, a loss in the family, and more. The experiences shaped the sound and feel of the band. In 2013 Pride and Fall returned with Of Lust and Desire, an album showing the band’s growth while maintaining the styles that were loved by their fans and forged over a tumultuous decade. Turn the Lights on EP was released 15.08.2014, and includes the original track, one Pride and Fall remix, three additional remixes and the new song As I Carve.
Ego
Pride and Fall Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Set all your frantic fears aside
Feel the power, which in it sleeps
It will fulfill your darkest dreams
There's no need for you to know
You'll learn the satisfaction in no
Every man you once held close
Don't push it away
Don't set it aside
You know your soul will stay the same
For every man you break
Your ego will grow
Make a wish and let it show
Let them see the power glow
For every time you raise your voice
Make them feel they have no choice
I know it's easy to get lost
In this throne I once held close
Now it's I who stand and watch
I see your ego as it grows
Don't push it away
Don't set it aside
You know your soul will stay the same
For every man you break
Your ego will grow
The song "Ego" by Pride and Fall delves into the temptations of power and the corrupting influence that it can have on individuals. The lyrics express the appeal of taking control, setting aside fear, and embracing the power that comes with it. The singer invites the listener to "place yourself upon my throne" and feel the "power, which in it sleeps" that will "fulfill your darkest dreams".
The lyrics warn of the dangers in seeking power, as it can lead to isolating oneself from others and creating fear within those around them. The singer notes that "every man you once held close will fear your growing wrath," highlighting the destructive nature of ego and the negative effect it can have on relationships.
The chorus of the song encourages the listener to embrace their ego and use it to their advantage. The lyrics state, "Don't push it away, don't set it aside, you know your soul will stay the same, for every man you break, your ego will grow." The message is clear: the more power one obtains, the more their ego will expand, and they will crave even more power.
In essence, "Ego" is a cautionary tale about the allure of power and the negative effects it can have on oneself and those around them. The lyrics encourage listeners to be aware of their ego and how it influences their actions and relationships.
