Priestess Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As I lie here trying to attain
Inside outside I'm nothing
But the more I see through the more I have to gain
If at first you don't succeed its normal
But the second time you're expected to perform
We perform
Give me a reason to stop asking
I know that some things can't be mine
Inside outside I'm nothing
And the layers crumble one piece at a time
if you expect me to go out there and shine every night
You know there's something about that that just isn't right
We perform
Stand up, listen, ill tell you where we went wrong
The lyrics of Priestess's song "Performance" convey a sense of struggle with the pressure to continually succeed and perform. The first verse suggests that some people view happiness as more of a burden than a desirable state of being. The line "As I lie here trying to attain" presents the sense of striving for something unattainable, leading to a feeling of being empty and insignificant both inside and outside. However, the singer recognizes that the more they see through this facade of performance, the more they have to gain in terms of personal growth and fulfillment.
The second verse acknowledges the expectation to perform and succeed, even when facing failures. The line "But the second time you're expected to perform" suggests that there is a societal pressure to continually succeed regardless of any setbacks. Despite this pressure, the artist highlights the importance of learning from mistakes in order to improve, urging the listener to "Stand up, listen, I'll tell you where we went wrong."
The song continues to contemplate the struggle for personal fulfillment and the ways in which this can conflict with societal expectations of performance. The repeated chorus line "We perform" becomes a cynical refrain, indicating the underlying sense of dissatisfaction and struggle that comes with continually performing for others.
