Primal Scream Lyrics

(dennis wilson & gregg jakobson)

Carry me home to my mama
Carry me home to my daddy
Rain falling down on me
Wind is blowing cold
I'm getting tired, I guess I'll never grow old
Carry me home to my mama
Carry me home to my daddy
Don't wanna die, can't let this feeling go
I wanna live

Life is meant to live, I'm afraid to die
I wanna live, I'm scared to die

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of Primal Scream's song "Carry Me Home" presents the theme of death, as the singer begs to be taken back to his parents, likely as a means of returning to innocence and childhood. The repetition of the phrase "Carry me home to my mama/Carry me home to my daddy" underscores the singer's desperation and desire for safety and protection. The rain and wind, which serve as a backdrop to the scene, reinforce the sense of cold, raw reality and impermanence.

In the second verse, the singer explicitly states that he "Don't wanna die," acknowledging the fragility of life and the inevitability of death. However, he also claims that he "can't let this feeling go" and "wanna live." Here, the song pivots from a meditation on dying to a celebration of life and a call to embrace it fully. The repetition of "I wanna live/I'm scared to die" further emphasizes this dichotomy and the singer's desire to hold onto life despite his fear.

Overall, "Carry Me Home" is a poignant reflection on mortality and the human desire for safety and survival. The song captures the essential tension between life and death, and the significance of connection and love in the face of uncertainty.

For 30 years I've had so many questions about this song. If it was unreleased, how did they ever hear it? Who's idea was it to record? Was Andrew Weatherall the producer? Is that a real theremin? And why is it so fucking good?

@mrjwpotter Song is credited to Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys and Greg Jackobson, on my bootleg. I believe it was recorded with the intnetion of being on the 1973 BB album Holland. It was rejected because of its morose subject matter. As I remember the story, the band was in Holland recording the album, and the idea was off a soldier dying in a ditch in WW2, and written as an anti- Vietnam war song.
