Higher Than the Sun
Primal Scream Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My brightest star's my inner light
Let it guide me
Experience and innocence bleed inside me
Hallucinogens can open me or untie me
I drift in inner space free of time
I find a higher state of grace in my mind

I'm beautiful
I wasn't born to follow
I live just for today
I don't care about tomorrow
What I got in my head
You can't buy, steal or borrow
I believe in live and let live
I believe you get what you give

I've glimpsed I have tasted
Fantastical places
My soul's an oasis
Higher than the sun
I'm higher than the sun
I'm higher than the sun

Higher than the sun
Higher than the sun
Higher than the sun
Higher than the sun
Higher than the sun
Higher than the sun
Higher than the sun
Higher than the sun
Higher than the sun
Higher than the sun
Higher than the sun

Higher than the sun
Higher than the sun

Overall Meaning

In Primal Scream's "Higher Than the Sun," the lyrics speak to the idea of finding inner peace and enlightenment through the use of drugs and expanding one's mind. The first verse speaks to the power of one's inner light and how it can guide them through life. The use of hallucinogens is mentioned as a way to open or untie the mind, ultimately leading to a higher state of consciousness. The chorus emphasizes the singer's belief in living in the present moment and not worrying about the future. They believe in the idea of karma and that one will receive what they put out into the world. The final verse speaks to the idea of experiencing fantastical places and finding one's own oasis within oneself by reaching a higher level of consciousness.

The lyrics of "Higher Than the Sun" reflect the counterculture movement of the 1990s and the idea of seeking spiritual enlightenment through the use of drugs. The song was released in 1991 and was a critical and commercial success in the UK. It has been noted as one of the defining songs of the acid house movement, which was centered around the use of the drug ecstasy as a means of achieving spiritual transcendence. In addition to its popularity in the UK, the song also gained a following in the United States and has been credited with influencing the development of the trip-hop genre.

Thanks to producer Andrew Weatherall, primal scream remain in the untouchable album category with "screamadelica" . A truly poignant timepiece that sounds like it's beyond expectation.. Especially in these dark mundane days of mass produced dogshit
