Not for Me
Primary Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Big man looking for trouble
He's got a wife and a mistress waiting with three little black kids
Coulda been circumcised at the wedding
Just because his old folks didn't think yet
Enter with the lightning, Computer Modified
Would be the end of a dignified race
And he reached his hand inside for the wallet
All he ever wanted was a pretty, pretty face

CHORUS
Ooh, ooh
This is Not For Me (Oh no)
I'm not ready yet
This is Not For Me (Oh no)
I'm not ready yet, I'm not ready yet

Come on tight, tight to this money
A constant grip takes a bite of my neck
Well, come on, fight a way for this money
And worry about the price at the end of the day
We could take a ride down the edge of summer
Fine red wines and cheap champagne
We could take a boat down the edge of Panama
Lights, fame - lights, fame - lights, flame

CHORUS to fade

Overall Meaning

The song "Not for Me" by Primary is a commentary on the negative aspects of materialism and how it can lead people to make poor choices. The first verse tells the story of a man who has a wife and a mistress, and also has children with both women. The line "Coulda been circumcised at the wedding" refers to the fact that he was not circumcised because his parents did not think it was necessary at the time. This line shows the idea that this man was not planned or prepared for, and as a result, he has made poor choices that have affected his family.

The second half of the verse talks about how the man is striving to become wealthy and powerful, but he is doing so in a way that is not dignified. He resorts to stealing and cheating, all in the name of obtaining a pretty face. The chorus repeats the line "This is not for me, I'm not ready yet" which expresses the singer's reluctance to follow the same path as the man in the story.

The second verse continues the theme of materialism, and talks about how people will do anything to obtain money, even if it means sacrificing their principles. The line "A constant grip takes a bite of my neck" shows how the pursuit of money can consume a person and leave them feeling drained. The idea of worrying about the price at the end of the day refers to the idea that people are willing to overlook the consequences of their actions as long as they obtain the money they desire.

Overall, "Not for Me" is a cautionary tale about the dangers of materialism and the negative effects it can have on people's lives.
