Young
Primary Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here's a big, strong man
A man of pure integrity
But underneath I know
That he is weaker than me
Well you can hear me tell him
That he holds it on so strong
But inside he's ready to blow
It's loaded like a memory

And this feeling is more than ever and it comes in slow-mo

I'm a little bit surer than hopeful
I Got a little bit silly in my youth
And I could have been a bigger man
Smaller, well at least I'm not tainted like you.

This beauty's fine she's a call of my disgrace
She make you do anything you would
You could but I'm a little bit dim.
A wee bit crazy in my youth
And I'ma little bit strange
But oh that's better than to be you.

I'm a little bit surer than hopeful
I Got a little bit silly in my youth
And I could have been a bigger man
Smaller, well at least I'm not tainted like you.

And I could have been a bigger man-Smaller,
And I could have been a bigger man-Smaller,
I Got a little bit silly in my youth

And I could have been a bigger man-Smaller,

And I could have been a bigger man-Smaller,
I Got a little bit sille-sille-sille-sillyee...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Primary's song "Young" seem to be a commentary on the facade that some people put up to hide their weaknesses and insecurities. The singer observes a "big, strong man" who appears to be the picture of integrity, but knows that this man is actually "weaker" than him. The man's inner struggles are likened to a loaded gun, ready to "blow" at any moment. The singer seems to be suggesting that it's better to be honest about one's vulnerabilities and flaws instead of trying to maintain a false image of strength.

The song also seems to be a reflection on the singer's own past mistakes and regrets. He admits to having been "a little bit silly" in his youth, but is now "a little bit surer than hopeful." He contrasts himself with someone who is "tainted" and suggests that he has learned from his past experiences and grown into a better person as a result.

Overall, "Young" is a song that encourages honesty and self-awareness. It warns against trying to be someone you're not and suggests that true strength comes from acknowledging and learning from one's weaknesses.

@gjpercy : I saw Primary perform live a number of times. In fact, every time they hit Adelaide. And man, were they a kick-ass band. A total shame they split-up. They deserved to on to bigger things for shit sure. I still play their "This is the Sound" CD regularly. Primary should never be forgotten.
