The Heckler
Primus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Through the door it slithers in,
Accompanied by its peers.
Always groveling for attention,
While no one really hears.
In its mind it's full of wit
And quite the social king.
It plants itself among the rest,
To give its deadly sting.

It's just a matter of opinion.

Further now there's a man of taste.
Of talent and precision.
To work and strive at his art form.
Has been his life's decision.
The stage is set. The perfect show
Is put before the mass.
Only to be ridiculed
By some slimy, pompous ass.

It's just a matter of opinion.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Primus's "The Heckler" delve into the theme of the judgment passed by people on the abilities of others. The opening lines "Through the door it slithers in, Accompanied by its peers." paint a vivid picture of a person who is trying hard to seek attention amongst his peers, but no one pays any heed to this attention-seeking behavior. The lyrics suggest that the person is convinced that he is witty and popular, but, in reality, he is not being recognized by his community. It is a subtle reminder of the underlying problem of people who are not valued despite their talent.

In the next few lines, the lyrics introduce a man of value and taste, who has put in immense effort and dedication to perfect his art form. The stage is set, and it is the perfect show, yet the man is ridiculed by a "slimy, pompous ass", which is a representation of the people who judge others based on their opinion. The lyrics suggest that the talent and hard work put into his art are not being recognized, and opinions are not much validation to one's skills. The powerful line, "It's just a matter of opinion," is repeated two times in the lyrics and summarizes that opinions do not necessarily define a person's true worth.

Overall, "The Heckler" by Primus is a profound commentary on the issues of judgment and opinions. The lyrics aptly define how the perceptions of one individual can affect the personality and validation of other individuals.

This song is a nightmare to learn as a guitar player.

Myndfields

@Billy Brookes Gibson has a Riff Lords video on Ler and he goes into the rather "unique" techniques he uses on this song.

@ESPECTRUM dang, old comment from me.
I found using rhythm/bass toggle and 6 o'clock tone to work with my shitty old amp I was using then.the pinches weren't hard to get, just the right ring out through my amp.
Its all about the amp and FX to get them nice little squeals, doesnt have to be fancy, just accommodating for the song.

ESPECTRUM

I find hard the chorus with the natuarl harmonics stuff

Scooter

Billy Brookes Try getting the speed to slap bass it properly... Although this is slower than when they play it live
