Prince Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, I got your back
Oh, if I could be your color

Baby, don't worry about me
Oh, if I could be your one part

Baby, I got your back

Oh, if I could be your color

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Prince's song 1999 speak of a sense of urgency and impending doom as the year 2000 approaches. The opening lines, "I was dreamin' when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray, but when I woke up this mornin', could've sworn it was judgment day," set the tone for the rest of the song. The sky being purple and people running everywhere trying to escape destruction further add to the sense of chaos and fear. However, the singer of the song is unfazed by this, stating that he didn't even care. He's going to party like it's 1999, which seems to be a last hurrah before the end of the world.

The second verse begins with a call to action. War is all around them and the singer's mind is telling him to prepare to fight. However, he's going to listen to his body and enjoy himself instead. The repetition of the line "they say two thousand zero zero, party over, oops out of time" drives home the idea that time is running out. The singer then declares that he's going to enjoy himself, regardless of the circumstances. He has a lion in his pocket, ready to roar, and he's not afraid to use it. The final lines of the song speak to the power of music and dancing. Rather than focus on the possibility of dying, the singer chooses to dance his life away instead.
