Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19, soon releasing the albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career. In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol logo. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist.
After signing with Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000. Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician who released 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased material left in a custom-built bank vault underneath his home after his death, including fully completed albums and over 50 finished music videos. He also released songs under multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor and "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Released posthumously, his demo albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019) both received critical acclaim.
Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

Prince & The New Power Generation's song Money Don't Matter 2 Night is a commentary on the true value of money, suggesting that despite the weight and importance we place on money, it ultimately lacks the power to solve all our problems. The song outlines the example of a man who gambling is his downfall. Despite playing his last card and losing, he still cannot recognise the importance of money. Nor can he provide for his loved ones, causing him to push away his loved ones. He resorts to saying "Money don't matter to night" as a way of easing his guilt, suggesting that he is willing to forsake money and care about love.
The song takes on a more powerful tone when it suggests that money is often used to justify war and violence. It asks whether it is worth sending a child off to war for the sake of controlling oil or whether we should focus on long life for ourselves and our loved ones. It also points out the hypocrisy of a society that claims to value life while simultaneously allowing children to be killed in gas clouds. The song, therefore, suggests that we ought to focus on our values and priorities, such as love and family, rather than being led astray by the pursuit of money.
Overall, Money Don't Matter 2 Night is a potent commentary on society's relationship with money, encouraging listeners to consider the larger picture and focus on what is truly important. By doing so, it suggests that we can lead more fulfilling and meaningful lives.

One more card and it's twenty two
He continues to take risks that don't pay off
Unlucky for him again
His luck never seems to improve
He never had respect for money it's true
He has always treated money frivolously
That's why he never wins
His careless attitude towards money leads to his failure
That's why he never ever has enough
He can never accumulate enough wealth to satisfy himself
To treat his lady right
He can't provide for his partner properly
He just pushes her away in a huff
When he fails financially, he becomes irritable with his partner
And says 'Money don't matter to night'
He dismisses the importance of money in the current situation
Money don't matter to night
The value of money at present is insignificant
It sure didn't matter yesterday
Even in the past, money didn't hold much significance
Just when you think you've got more than enough
When you feel secure with your wealth
That's when it all up and flies away
That's when you lose it all in an instant
That's when you find out that you're better off
You realize that it's more important to secure your well-being than your money
Makin' sure your soul's alright
Prioritizing personal growth and inner satisfaction
'Cause money didn't matter yesterday,
Money has never been the key to true happiness
And it sure don't matter to night
Current events have not changed the insignificance of money
Look, here's a cool investment
He is introduced to a 'surefire' investment opportunity
They're tellin' him he just can't lose
He is promised that there is no risk involved in the investment
So he goes off and tries to find a partner
He seeks out someone to invest with him
But all he finds are users (users)
He discovers that everyone he meets is only interested in taking advantage of him
All he finds are snakes in ever color
People from all walks of life try to swindle him
Every nationality and size
The deceitful people come from diverse backgrounds
Seems like the only thing he can do
He feels helpless in the face of such widespread fraudulence
Is just roll his eyes, and say that
All he can do is express his disappointment and disillusionment with the situation
(ooh-wee-ooh, don't matter)
Money is still insignificant despite these developments
(it don't matter to night, no)
The ongoing theme is reaffirmed
Hey now, maybe we can find a good reason
A suggestion is put forth
To send a child off to war
Perhaps we can justify violence by claiming it's for a good cause
So what if we're controllin' all the oil,
We may be exploiting resources in unethical ways
Is it worth a child dying for? (is it worth it?)
The singer is skeptical of the cost of warfare
If long life is what we all live for
If we aim for longevity and fulfillment in life
Then long life will come to pass
We will achieve that goal eventually
Anything is better than the picture of the child
Any other outcome is preferable to innocent children being harmed
In a cloud of gas
A reference to chemical warfare and its horrific effects
And you think you got it bad
A reminder that our problems are small in comparison to those of innocent victims of war
Money don't matter to night (no, don't matter)
The chorus is repeated one more time
It sure didn't matter yesterday (yesterday)
A repeat of the previous line
Just when you think you've got more than enough
A repeat of a previous verse
That's when it all up and flies away (flies away, flies away)
A repeat of a previous verse
That's when you find out that you're better off
A repeat of a previous verse
Makin' sure your soul's alright
A repeat of a previous verse
Money didn't matter yesterday,
A repeat of a previous verse
It sure don't matter to night
A repeat of a previous chorus
