Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19, soon releasing the albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career. In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol logo. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist.
After signing with Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000. Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician who released 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased material left in a custom-built bank vault underneath his home after his death, including fully completed albums and over 50 finished music videos. He also released songs under multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor and "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Released posthumously, his demo albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019) both received critical acclaim.
Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

You had me living in a dark right now
I'm just tryna see the light right now
So spread a lil bit of love right now
They don't wanna see another black man win
They don't wanna see another nigga from the ghetto really try and get it
Man I seen it with my own two, two times many
Don't say I never told you, still try get it
Money can I loan, but when I asked the way to do it
Yeah been tryna to make it work but we still keep stressing
My nigga, yeah we still keep stressing
I told you I'm good right now
So you gotta keep it hood right now
So tell me what's good tell me what's good ay ya ya
So tell me what's good tell me what's good ay ya ya
Tell me what's good, really been about it
Didn't wanna tell me how to get it
You was always dyin'
I'm that nigga front of every joint
Now they wanna start, now they wanna bump that new ish from the boy
How you feel about it? Can't feel about the boy right now
Been a minute, put myself on right now
Can't trust nobody, trust nobody
I was down on my luck and I had noboy
But it's all good I seen through the bullshit, I know
Had to maneuver the useless and find my own flow
And I know what it takes to be great, made mistakes of my own
I admit now I'm grown
But I still try to get it nigga
Still try get it, still learn lessons
Money can I loan, but when I asked the way to do it
Yeah been tryna to make it work but we still keep stressing
My nigga, yeah we still keep stressing
I told you I'm good right now
So you gotta keep it hood right now
So tell me what's good tell me what's good ay ya ya
So tell me what's good tell me what's good ay ya ya
Tell me what's good right now
Getting money like I should right now
I don't have to explain what's already understood right now
Used to get it in the alley with my G reminiscing in the house
From broke as a joke
To having the last laugh, I didn't crack when I had poor, honestly
Is this the realest shit I ever wrote, probably
In the fast lane I'm Bolt, on 'em
The GOAT never takes L's, no blokes
Promise me, if you break bread we'll toast
I wanna buy a house, I don't wanna sell out my home, no
Bring out the coldest gyal for my koti
I'm in the stripclub, I don't wanna get strip-searched by the police na na
Fuck what you heard you don't know me
Living your dream takes no sleep, no sleep
I told you I'm good right now
So you gotta keep it hood right now
So tell me what's good tell me what's good ay ya ya
So tell me what's good tell me what's good ay ya ya
I told you I'm good right now
So you gotta keep it hood right now
So tell me what's good tell me what's good ay ya ya
So tell me what's good tell me what's good ay ya ya
In Prince's song "Peace," the lyrics describe the struggles and challenges faced by a black man in society. The first verse starts off with the singer asking for a break from the constant pressure and worries that have been weighing him down. He espouses the need for love and support during tough times, especially when facing racism and discrimination. The second verse continues with the theme of perseverance and overcoming obstacles, with the singer reflecting on his journey from humble beginnings to his current success.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the singer's desire to stay true to his roots and remain grounded in his identity despite his newfound success. He asks those around him to keep it "hood," meaning to stay true to their collective experiences and struggles. The final verse highlights some of the specific challenges faced by black men, including police brutality and stereotypes perpetuated by society. Despite these challenges, the singer remains confident in his abilities and determination to succeed, promising to keep striving towards his goals.
