Raspberry Beret
Prince The Revolution Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah

I was working part time in a five-and-dime
My boss was Mr. McGee
He told me several times that he didn't like my kind
'Cause I was a bit too leisurely

Seems that I was busy doing something close to nothing
But different than the day before
That's when I saw her, ooh, I saw her
She walked in through the out door, out door

She wore a
Raspberry beret
The kind you find in a second hand store
Raspberry beret
And if it was warm she wouldn't wear much more
Raspberry beret
I think I love her

Built like she was
She had the nerve to ask me
If I planned to do her any harm
So, look here
I put her on the back of my bike
And we went riding
Down by old man Johnson's farm

I said now, overcast days never turned me on
But something about the clouds and her mixed
She wasn't to bright
But I could tell when she kissed me
She knew how to get her kicks

She wore a
Raspberry beret
The kind you find in a second hand store
Raspberry beret
And if it was warm she wouldn't wear much more
Raspberry beret
I think I love her

The rain sounds so cool when it hits the barn roof
And the horses wonder who you are
Thunder drowns out what the lightning sees
You feel like a movie star

Listen
They say the first time ain't the greatest
But I tell ya
If I had the chance to do it all again
I wouldn't change a stroke
'Cause baby I'm the most
With a girl as fine as she was then

(Raspberry beret)
The kind you find (The kind you find)
The kind you find (In a second hand store)
Oh no no
(Raspberry beret)
(And if it was warm)
Where have all the raspberry women gone?
Yeah (Raspberry beret)

I think I, I think I, I think I love her

(Raspberry beret)
No no no
No no no (The kind you find)
(In a second hand store)
(Raspberry beret)
Tell me
Where have all the raspberry women gone? (And if it was warm she)

(Wouldn't wear much more)
(Raspberry beret)

Overall Meaning

The opening lyrics of Raspberry Beret depict a young man who was working at a five-and-dime under the supervision of a boss, Mr. McGee. His boss expressed dissatisfaction with him as his work tempo was not as swift as he would have liked. Rather than getting worked up about the comments from his superior, the guy continues "busy doing something" at his own leisure. It's at this point he lays eyes on a lady, who walks in “through the out door.” She wears a raspberry beret bought from a second-hand store that immediately catches his eye. As the song progresses, he goes on to describe their bike ride and the beauty of the rain, but primarily, he can’t get enough of the woman with the raspberry beret.

While many fans of the song may just view "Raspberry Beret" as being about falling for a girl in a cool hat, there's a deeper meaning to the lyrics. Prince often used fruit as a metaphor for, ahem, certain female anatomy parts. The raspberry beret can thus be interpreted as a symbol of the woman's sexuality and individuality.

@@halligraf9131  On situations like that people never really know what to say....BUT...take heart.
I've been affected by losing a loved one to suicide before. So I will say...Focus on the good moments that you did get to experience. Be glad for the time/ years he was here.
I know that you miss him a lot. Not to minimize your pain but I'm sure he wouldn't want you depressed or feeling down.

I'm CURRENTLY grieving also from an additional loss.
Prince's music gives me good memories of the past, ability to cope in the present and a brighter outllook for the future.
I thank God for it because It's very therapeutic for me.
Take comfort in this music ...and don't blame yourself. That's what I did initially because I was just trying to ...understand.
Suicide leaves the survivors spinning mentally.
DON'T go into the abyss.
I've been there & had to come out. It does take some time. Focus on the LOVE and keep going. I'm sure that your son would want that for you.
#sending you a virtual hug🫂
#Enjoy Prince's 🎶 and let it help you in your healing journey

I'm so please Prince has a strong hold on YouTube now. His stuff was not here for so long, but look how it pulls huge view numbers. I worked on Prince's shows in Sydney in the Diamonds and Pearls tour. That made me understand this guy is the absolute real deal. A true musician, showman and songwriter. One of the all time best.

@MRTN1404

He mad music because he loved music and was constantly looking for new styles, expanding his limits. So different from the artists from today who are just in it for the money.

@Euro.Patriot

leokimvideo That's because he died, no one cared about him from 2000-2016.

@lovinliverpool

Exactly. I saw an interview where he said he had a hard time sleeping because his mind never rested from making music. Kind of a blessing and curse all in one. Artists like him are proof that some people are born with an exceptional talent

@leokimvideo

Back on the Diamond And Pearls tour Prince had custom guitar picks that said Love God. I used to make it my mission to have a chat to the guitar tech so I could score a custom pick. The Prince one I have is the one I like the most. I feel the real revelation of his art is yet to come for many people. He will become far more famous in years to come. Thats what amazing artists do.

I'd be honored if some Prince fans would check out my acoustic piano & vocal cover of MONEY DON'T MATTER 2 NIGHT (from the Diamonds & Pearls album) on my channel in tribute to one of the Man's underrated classics that has stood the test of time. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and RESPECT to the genius of Prince.
