Alive
Private Line Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Save me a place in heaven
I've done my time in hell
Nothing's forgotten or forgiven
I've learned my lesson well

Laugh and the world laughs with you
Cry and you cry all alone
I've been around long enough to know
You don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone

If you want me to
I could count on you
(You made me feel)
I'm alive, I'm alive
Let your heart bare your soul
More I learn the less I know
(You made me feel)
I'm alive, I'm alive

Don't say a word about the future
It takes care of itself
Don't say a word about the past
Let's see who will laugh last
I've seen around long enough to know
It's better to believe in the devil you know
Than the one you don't

If you want me to
I could count on you
(You made me feel)
I'm alive, I'm alive
Let your heart bare your soul
More I learn the less I know
(You made me feel)
I'm alive, I'm alive

If you try walking in my shoes
I'm talking you might lose, just walk away
Walk away now
If you try walking in my shoes
I'm talking why I choose to walk away
If you try walking in my shoes
I'm talking you might lose, just walk away
Walk away now
If you try walking in my shoes
I'm talking you might lose, just walk away
Walk away now
Walk away now
If you try walking in my shoes
I'm talking you might lose, just walk away

Walk away now
Yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Private Line’s song “Alive” can be interpreted as the reflection of the singer’s realization that life has taken them on a journey that has not been easy. The first two lines of the song speak of the singer’s experiences that have led them to feel like they’ve done time in hell. The request to “save me a place in heaven” implies that they have been through a difficult phase in life and are in need of a sense of assurance of better things to come. The singer acknowledges that “nothing’s forgotten or forgiven” but they have “learned their lesson well”. This line may suggest that they have come out of the other end of a challenging experience, but have also matured along the way.

The following lines of the chorus show the singer’s appreciation of the present moment and the people in their life who have helped them come through their struggles. They acknowledge that they have been “alive” and that the other person has “made them feel” this way. The singer expresses their vulnerability by admitting that they have “learned the less I know” and how much they rely on the other person to support them. This vulnerability is brought out more with the line “let your heart bare your soul.”

The future will happen regardless, and the past is in the past. Let's see how everything plays out. I've lived long enough to know that it's better to stick with what you know versus taking a chance on something new and unpredictable.

If you try walking in my shoes I'm talking you might lose, just walk away Walk away now If you try walking in my shoes I'm talking why I choose to walk away If you try walking in my shoes I'm talking you might lose, just walk away Walk away now Walk away now If you try walking in my shoes I'm talking you might lose, just walk away Walk away now Yeah
I warn you, if you try to understand my situation or perspective, you may end up getting hurt or losing something. It's better for both of us if you just walk away and leave it be.
