A Whiter Shade Of Pale
Procol Harem Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, 'There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see.'
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might have just as well've been closed
She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,'
Though in truth we were at sea
So I took her by the looking glass
And forced her to agree
Saying, 'You must be the mermaid
Who took Neptune for a ride.'
But she smiled at me so sadly
That my anger straightway died
If music be the food of love
Then laughter is its queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head

So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed

Overall Meaning

Procol Harem's "A Whiter Shade of Pale" is a classic rock ballad that was released in 1967. It is a cryptic and poetic song that has been interpreted in multiple ways. The opening lines of the song talk about skipping the light fandango, which is a type of dance, and turning cartwheels ‘cross the floor. The singer feels seasick but the crowd calls out for more. The room starts to hum harder and the ceiling flies away. They ask for another drink and the waiter brings a tray. Later, the singer and the woman are at sea, and she turns a whiter shade of pale. She says that there is no reason, but the singer wanders through his playing cards and won't let her be.

The second stanza talks about the woman being one of sixteen vestal virgins who are leaving for the coast. Although the singer's eyes are open, they might have just as well have been closed. She reveals that she is home on shore leave, but in truth, they were at sea. The singer takes her by the looking glass and forces her to agree, saying that she must be the mermaid who took Neptune for a ride. But she smiles at him so sadly that his anger straightaway dies. The third stanza talks about music being the food of love, and laughter being its queen. If behind is in front, then dirt in truth is clean. The singer’s mouth, by then like cardboard, seems to slip straight through his head. They crash-dive straight away and quickly attack the ocean bed.

The song's lyrics are full of symbolic imagery, and the storyline has been interpreted in multiple ways. Some interpret the song as a journey through the afterlife, while others see it as a commentary on drug use. The song has a timeless quality, and its poetic lyrics combined with its organ melody made it very popular. It has been covered multiple times by artists including Annie Lennox, Joe Cocker, and Van Morrison.

I'm so sorry for your loss .....l can't begin to imagine your pain .
In 2017 l lost my husband to a Brain Aneurysm......
He was my best friend, and my love.
In one minute l became single again
It's like all the years & life we shared together never existed....and here l am to pick up the pieces left of me, l had to learn who l am now all over again.
My sisters husband passed on 1 month before my husband died.
But he was 94 my husband was 46.
At least we grieved together somewhat.
She now has a boyfriend about 2 years.
I'm happy for her.
I would rather have a dog....
Im 64 now and l am not really interested in finding someone that fits.....
I don't think l can.😂❤

I'm 21. A lot of people are commenting about how they grew up with this song, but I think it's important to know that young people, though we may not have the nostalgia, are still discovering great music like this from generations before us. Songs like this truly are timeless.
