Alpha
Procol Harum Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My parents must've disliked me. they left me in the lurch
Packed me in a basket which was left in a church
It was found by a nun
Who took one peep and run
Screaming 'there's an eye in the middle of his head!'

The man in charge reflected and then to me he said,
'all men are born equal. you can earn your daily bread;
Go now to the belfry

Where the bats are blind and can't see
There's an eye in the middle of your head.'

I sat there in the gloom, thought about my lousy luck;
At least if your body's offensive then your clothes cover it up
But my forehead is quite smooth

Except for one circular groove
And that's the eye in the middle of my head.

Overall Meaning

The song "Alpha" by Procol Harum talks about the struggles of an individual who believes that he is ill-fated and is troubled by the physical appearance of a third eye in the middle of his forehead. The lyrics are narrated in the first person perspective and imply that he was abandoned by his parents and left in a church as a child. The song refers to the experiences of this individual, who is an outcast in society and suffers from the stigma of being different. He recalls the moment when a nun found him in a basket and the distress that was caused when the nun screamed upon seeing the third eye.

The song's lyrics illustrate the irony of life, where we often have no control over our physical or mental traits. Despite the individual's misfortune, he is told that everyone is born equal and can earn their daily bread. He is advised to go to the belfry, where the bats are blind and cannot see his unique trait, but all he can think of is his lousy luck. The line "At least if your body's offensive then your clothes cover it up" explains that it is more comfortable to hide an offensive body through the clothes than to live with an unusual trait. However, the individual must live with his prominent feature, which is the third eye in the middle of his head.

Overall, "Alpha" is a powerful song that uses symbolic language to depict the struggles of those who are different from society's norms. The song's lyrics convey the message that everyone is born unique, but at times such uniqueness can cause pain and suffering.

It was a bonus track on the reissue of the '90s, also on the 2009 remaster of the first album. Allegedly the first song ever written for Procol Harum, recorded in '67 but never released back then. Just a nice little blues with really great lyrics. ;) Also one of the very few "regular" blueses recorded in studio by the band. I wonder if that's Trower on guitar…Actually suspect it's Royer but I'm no expert there. They did it occasionally in '90s and '00s, a 2005 rcording is up on my channel.

Jack: I have always thought that "Something following Me" was the first song Gary and Keith wrote "together"; do you recall that Keith sent Gary the first set of lyrics in the mail, and the next day Keith phoned Gary and during the call quoted "Something Following Me" and Gary was shocked as he had just finished writing the music for it, and it was the first one he had done. At least this is my memory.

I believe this was a session for the first album, and it was playing like this by Bobby Harrison and Ray Royers which convinced Gary that they had to be replaced. They were o.k. for some appearances, but were not good enough for the studio (Gary replaced Bobby for the recording of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" with a session drummer, and there is no guitar part on that record also.) Harrison and Royers were fired and replaced with two Paramounts, Robin Trower and B.J. Wilson, infinitely better players.

I've never heard this one before, either.  Certainly not on any version of "Shine On" that I've got.  Not sure who's on 6-string, but it ain't Trower, so far as I can tell, unless he was heavily sedated!  Sounds like one of those tracks that might not have been a real "keeper."  Glad it's been kept, though.

The way new "classics" of P H keep filtering out of the past makes you wonder if Beethoven wrote a Tenth Symphony, But I doubt it would be a thrilling.

This one is new to me as well.

The official Minion song! With the eye in the middle of its head! 🤣

Don't knock the rock

Great song but sounds like a rehearsal / run through. Good point about the guitarist: maybe not Trower but who I wonder?

don't knock the rock,
ray royer is the guitar player.
