Nothing But The Truth
Procol Harum Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It seems as clear as yesterday
We saw it in a dream
But dream became insanity
An awful gaping scream

So sad to see such emptiness
So sad to see such tears
And heaped up leaves of bitterness
Turned mouldy down the years

Nothing but the truth
Common words in use
Hard to find excuse
Harder than the truth

Like Icarus we flew too high
We flew too near the sun
They caught us in that awful glare
Our hapless throats were strung
But just before the final stroke
They took us victims of the rope
And cast us far beyond the deep
To lie in never ending sleep

It seems as clear as yesterday
They cast us in the deep
We lie in darkest night for good
Never ending sleep

A never ending bitter gloom
Whose darkness seldom clears

A God forsaken emptiness
Which fills our hearts with tears

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Procol Harum's song 'Nothing But The Truth' describe the aftermath of a failed dream, and the painful reality that follows. The song is a reflection on the consequences of striving for something out of reach, and the despair that comes with the realization that it can never be attained. The imagery of the lyrics is powerful, with references to the Greek myth of Icarus and his fatal attempt to fly too close to the sun, and the idea of being cast into an endless, dark sleep, abandoned by all.

The lyrics paint a picture of a shattered dream, of the painful reality that follows, and of the profound sense of loss that accompanies it. The song speaks to the human experience of striving for something, only to find oneself falling short, and the emptiness that ensues. The line "So sad to see such emptiness, so sad to see such tears" captures the sadness and despair that are at the heart of the song.

WHY ON EARTH they donΒ΄t make music like this these days?? This sounds like it was released last week. Great melody, great kick to this and everything that makes a hit!!

Procol Harum was making symphonic rock before this, but now they made it with a less strings and MORE rock.. Really love this tune. It's strong (as Samson).

ROBERT CHARLES HAYNES

It was actually released in 1974, the album "Exotic Birds And Fruit" on Chrysalis CHR 1058. Beats "Whiter Shade" by miles. Procol should be better known for what they did for Regal Zonophone & later Chrysalis than just one single. Like most other acts that are known by the vast majority for one single. One single release is just not enough if the acts concerned have a back catalogue available of other material there.

One of those unknown treasures that makes you feel like belonging to some secret society...

+Antonio Dias Probably my favorite piece by PH.

The whole structure of this song is amazing.Β I know this Exotic-album is most known for 'Strong as Samson' (which is great, of course), but his tune is like a blue print for Rock and Roll..

aivazovski96

The whole album is outstanding.

David

Yes. Their last great album sadly

John LaStrada

Damn.....that BJ Wilson smokes on drums and really ignites the song -- Gary Brooker's vocals are at their aggressive and rocking best. Rock music for the intelligent. Sounds like it was recorded yesterday.Β
