Negative
Project Jenny Project Jan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It seems we’ve come to the last scene, Nadine*
The whole play came and went now we don’t know what to say.
It might be stage fright, might be dreams, Nadine.
After all,
Flashback to the first act, first scene, Nadine.
We were exact we knew the facts, knew what to say.
We should have seen it coming we were looking the other way.
You never know how these things go, but you try them all the same.
I think you know what I mean, Nadine.
I think you know what I mean, Nadine.
How come you make me take the lead, Nadine?
You know I’m not the man I used to be.
I could have played the part, I could’ve done it so easily.
You could’ve played the beauty queen.
But we stand here watching, the whole things crashing, and falling apart at the seams.
I think you know what I mean, Nadine.
I think you know what I mean,
I think I’m still in love with you, I think I’m still in love with you
And if you still love me too,
No ones watching, we’ll stop the talking, turn the lights off and
Start it over again.
I think you know what I mean, Nadine.

I think you know what I mean, Nadine.
Nadine.

Overall Meaning

"Negative" by Project Jenny Project Jan is a song about a failed relationship, with the lyrics as a dialogue between two people named Nadine and the singer. The first verse talks of a past event, the end of a play, pointing to the end of their relationship. They seem unsure of how to proceed, either due to nervousness or because they have already gone through everything there is to do in their relationship. The second verse takes the listeners back to the beginning of their relationship, where they were very much in love with each other. However, they missed out on the signs that their relationship was in peril, and as a result, they find their relationship disintegrating. The chorus is an admission from the singer to Nadine that he is still in love with her, and wants to try again to restart their relationship, but the risks involved are too high. The song ends with the singer and Nadine being unsure of what they want to do next, with Nadine's name being repeated several times.

The song's lyrics are poetic and enigmatic, leaving much room for interpretation. One could easily read into the song and assign their meaning or story to it. However, the core idea is of a failed relationship and the difficulties in restarting it. The song tries to convey the emotions and tensions exhibited by the duo, with their future in doubt. The lyrics are complemented by a tune that is catchy and easy to hum along, providing the song with an excellent balance of meaning and melody.

So i got introduced to this song by an awesome hippy girl named kathy no bathy in bilixi Mississippi when we were volunteering after hurricane katrina.... It became our whole volunteer camps song and it was an embarassing amount of time before any of us really caught the lyrics... Then it took me several years to finally find the song again.... But to all the burners without birders out there much love from camp katrina.
