1. Synthpop band Propaganda was formed in Germany by vocalist Claudia Brücken and drummer Michael Mertens plus keyboard players Susanne Freytag and Ralf Dorper. The quartet moved to England in 1983 and signed to ZTT Records, also the home of Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Art of Noise. Propaganda's first single, "Dr. Mabuse," reached the British Top 30 in early 1984, but the band's second release was more than a year in coming. Finally, in May 1985, "Duel" trumped the debut single by hitting number 21.
Propaganda's first album A Secret Wish appeared one month later, and the resulting tour necessitated the addition of bassist Derek Forbes and drummer Brian McGee -- both formerly with Simple Minds. After the release of the remix album Wishful Thinking later that year, Dorper became the first original member to leave the band, and Propaganda splintered soon after, due to a prolonged legal battle to leave ZTT. The group finally re-emerged in 1988 with Mertens, Forbes, McGee and American vocalist Betsi Miller. The quartet signed with Virgin, and released 1234 in 1990. The single "Heaven Give Me Words" broke the British Top 40 in 1990, and "Only One Word" placed modestly later that year.
Meanwhile, Claudia Brücken -- who had stayed with ZTT in large part because of her marriage to label-owner Paul Morley -- formed Act with Thomas Leer. The duo charted "Snobbery and Decay" in mid-1987 and released their only album, Laughter, Tears, and Rage in 1988. Brücken became a solo act by the turn of the decade, and charted only one single, "Absolut (E)," from her 1991 album Love, And a Million Other Things. Though neither the band nor Brücken had recorded recently, rumours flew during the mid-'90s that a Propaganda reunion was in the works.
2. Jason Emmanuel Petty (born May 27, 1979), better known by his stage name Propaganda, is an American Christian hip hop and spoken word artist and poet from Los Angeles, California. He has released four albums as an independent artist and one collaborative album with the rapper Odd Thomas, and has performed and recorded as a member of the underground hip hop group Tunnel Rats and associated act Footsoldiers.

Hurt by envy, cut by greed
Face to face with their own disillusions
The scars of old romances still on their cheeks
And when blow by blow
The passion dies sweet little death
Just have been lies
Some memories of gone by time would still recall the lies
The first cut won't hurt at all
The second only makes you wonder
The third will have you on your knees
You start bleeding, I start screaming
It's too late, the decision is made by fate
Time to prove what forever should last
Whose feelings are so true as to stand the test?
Whose demands are so strong as to parry all attacks?
And when blow by blow
The passion dies sweet little death
Just have been lies
Some memories of gone by time will still recall the lies
The first cut won't hurt at all
The second only makes you wonder
The third will have you on your knees
You start bleeding, I start screaming
The first cut won't hurt at all
The second only makes you wonder
The third will have you on your knees
You start bleeding, I start screaming
The first cut won't hurt at all
The second only makes you wonder
The third will have you on your knees
You start bleeding, I start screaming
The first cut won't hurt at all
The second only makes you wonder
The third will have you on your knees
You start bleeding, I start screaming
The song "Duel" by Propaganda is about a couple who are standing face to face, "winners and losers," hurt by envy and cut by greed. They are confronting their own disillusionments and the scars of their past romances are still visible on their cheeks. The passion between them is dying, and they are left with memories of lies and betrayal. The lyrics suggest that in a relationship, the first cut may not hurt, but the second cut will make you wonder, and the third cut will have you on your knees, bleeding and screaming. The decision is made by fate, and the question remains whether their feelings are strong enough to stand the test and whether their demands are strong enough to parry all attacks.
The lyrics of "Duel" are open to interpretation, but many believe the song is about a toxic relationship that has come to an end. The "winners and losers" can be interpreted as two people who are trying to win the battle of love but are left with scars and pain. The passion dying suggests that the relationship has lost its spark and the couple is left with memories of betrayal and lies. The three cuts mentioned in the lyrics may represent three stages of a toxic relationship - the first stage when the cracks start to show, the second when doubts begin to creep in, and the third when the relationship falls apart.

The best thing about being in my 50's now, is that I was a teenager in the 80's. What a wonderful period of my life, and this is one of my favourite 80's tunes...
