1. Synthpop band Pro… Read Full Bio ↴There are two Bands under the Name Propaganda :
1. Synthpop band Propaganda was formed in Germany by vocalist Claudia Brücken and drummer Michael Mertens plus keyboard players Susanne Freytag and Ralf Dorper. The quartet moved to England in 1983 and signed to ZTT Records, also the home of Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Art of Noise. Propaganda's first single, "Dr. Mabuse," reached the British Top 30 in early 1984, but the band's second release was more than a year in coming. Finally, in May 1985, "Duel" trumped the debut single by hitting number 21.
Propaganda's first album A Secret Wish appeared one month later, and the resulting tour necessitated the addition of bassist Derek Forbes and drummer Brian McGee -- both formerly with Simple Minds. After the release of the remix album Wishful Thinking later that year, Dorper became the first original member to leave the band, and Propaganda splintered soon after, due to a prolonged legal battle to leave ZTT. The group finally re-emerged in 1988 with Mertens, Forbes, McGee and American vocalist Betsi Miller. The quartet signed with Virgin, and released 1234 in 1990. The single "Heaven Give Me Words" broke the British Top 40 in 1990, and "Only One Word" placed modestly later that year.
Meanwhile, Claudia Brücken -- who had stayed with ZTT in large part because of her marriage to label-owner Paul Morley -- formed Act with Thomas Leer. The duo charted "Snobbery and Decay" in mid-1987 and released their only album, Laughter, Tears, and Rage in 1988. Brücken became a solo act by the turn of the decade, and charted only one single, "Absolut (E)," from her 1991 album Love, And a Million Other Things. Though neither the band nor Brücken had recorded recently, rumours flew during the mid-'90s that a Propaganda reunion was in the works.
2. Jason Emmanuel Petty (born May 27, 1979), better known by his stage name Propaganda, is an American Christian hip hop and spoken word artist and poet from Los Angeles, California. He has released four albums as an independent artist and one collaborative album with the rapper Odd Thomas, and has performed and recorded as a member of the underground hip hop group Tunnel Rats and associated act Footsoldiers.
Only One Word
Propaganda Lyrics

So close to my heart
There lies a rumour
That tears us apart
Deep down inside me
So close to my soul
Unspoken secrets
Betraying us all
Since you had to go
Only one word
Can define the feeling
That bridges between
You and me
Only one sound
Can express the meaning
That lasts until we...
As I close my eyes
I think of the past
My fate awaits me
The die has been cast
Deep down inside me
Where dreams come alive
With you beside me
I'll always survive
Time goes by so slow
Since you had to go
Only one word
Can define the feeling
That bridges between
You and me
Only one sound
Can express the meaning
That lasts until we meet
Only one word
Only one word
Can define the feeling
That bridges between
You and me
Only one sound
Can express the meaning
That lasts until we meet
Only one word
The lyrics to Propaganda's song Only One Word are filled with intense emotion and a sense of longing for someone who has left. The singer expresses the feeling of having a damaging rumor within them that is tearing them apart from the person they love. The unspoken secrets that they hold inside are betraying them both, and time moves too slowly since their departure.
However, the singer believes that there is only one word and one sound that can help define and express the true meaning of their feelings. This one word bridges the gap between them and the person they love, and the one sound expresses the depth and longevity of their connection. Even as the singer thinks of the past, they remain hopeful for the future and dream of being alongside their loved one once again.
Overall, the song portrays a deep yearning and desire for someone who is missing in the singer's life. The lyrics show the power of words and sounds to communicate complex emotions and bridge the distance between people.

"1234" is still one of the best pop albums ever made, despite the fact that group itself changed. The singles were awesome, I still don't understand that it wasn't a success at all.

There are still surprisingly "philosophical" moments on "1234". Most of the original-line-up swept away for the occasion - but then, "A Secret Wish" while remaining a favourite, wasn't recorded by consistent line-up either - which happens to have changed between "Disziplin" in 1983 and "Wishful Thinking in 1985. Propaganda was always more of a studio project of joint forces (an interesting bunch of people actually... The trademark sound was indeed too strong on "A Secret Wish" for "1234" to compare, but I accept the fact Propaganda mk II weren't even considering to repeat any of the formula that made their debut a bigger favourite.
At the time this was a bit too sophisticated or say - "boring" - but from a time distance of 24 years, "1234" is one of those best underrated albums that define the true side of what is "adult-pop". And having the original Simple Minds' rhythm section in the line-up, the gorgeous Betsi Miller singing respectfully, keeping some of the early artsy moments + Michael Mertens and Suzanne Freitag still contributing... Maybe the whole of Propaganda is way too much credit given to Claudia Brücken alone - while she gave it a voice and a face, Propaganda is too strong a collective rather than just work of one person. Which again, makes "1234" like an old red wine, forgotten - but just as tasty.
