They long for the validation of the person they love, and they have gone to great lengths to impress them. They would do anything for this person, including buying new clothes to impress them.
The repetition of the chorus underscores the passion and intensity of the singer's love. The repeating lines "I want you to want me, I need you to need me" emphasize the depth of their longing for the other person. The line "And I want you now" is the most crucial line of the song, as it indicates the urgency this person has for their love. The singer cannot contain their desire any longer and wants the other person to reciprocate their feelings.
However, the song takes a slightly different turn towards the end of the song. The band inserts a spoken-word passage where they introduce Megan, a vegan who would never eat bacon or hurt an innocent pig. This passage introduces a sudden twist in the song, where the topic of love is abruptly brought back to reality.
