Supporting Caste
Propagandhi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the credits finally
Roll, on this the
Worst story ever
Told, don't bother
Sifting through the names
For yours or anyone you know, unless they
Were by chance a shepherd king,
A virgin birth, or resurrection, a messianic prince or some
Such childish thing.
You can [story end is sweet]
Move to block its theatrical release,
But I think we
Can safely guarantee
There will be no revisions to the script made on behalf
Of a supporting caste.

Cause history accepts
Only
The pornography of force,
That of
Murderers and psychopaths, the rest of us of course
Stricken from the narrative wholesale.
A backdrop to their jail!

As we
With two pence,
Are rushed right swiftly off the stage with
Child bones,
Of asses,
The story couldn't call for the masses.
No floral bouquet,
No breaking of legs,
No recurring role,
No artistic control!

Its so weird these days,
This torment we face,
Its all left to chance,
A piece of advice,
If you're cast on thin ice,
You may as well dance.

Do what you feel you must,
But as for me I was not

Put upon this earth
To subjugate or serve.

Overall Meaning

In "Supporting Caste," Propagandhi speaks about the limitations of history and the lack of recognition given to those who are not the historical elite. The song opens with a reflection on the end of the world, or at the very least, the end of an era in history. The song writes off hopes of recognition for anyone from history whose life did not embody the magical, miraculous, or royal. The world seems to be hurtling to an end, exemplified by the idea that there will be "no theatrical release" of this end, no celebratory conclusion or parades of the "supporting castes" who participated in history but were not given the hero-vibes. The song then delves into the idea that history is often only remembered for its pornography of force, its murderers, and problematic and violent figures. Propagandhi suggests that non-violent and non-elitist figures are sidelined or erased from the narrative wholesale. The idea that history does not allow itself to acknowledge nuance or the non-elitist experience results in a society that reinforces the inequalities of the past. Propagandhi asks us to dance on thin ice because nothing is permanent, except for our human responses to the stresses and oppression of our world.

In an interview with Vice, band member Chris Hannah stated that the song is "about trying to give voice to people whose stories don't get told because the people in power don't really ever let it get told. You only ever get the perspective of the people who won the battles or who colonized the places. There's an obvious trend in human history of just speaking on behalf of people who don't have a voice or just speaking over them. It isn't unique to me to see that as a problem that needs a problematized. You can trace it back throughout human history.”

Post the closure of the worst story in history, there is no point checking for the credits as there is no one worth identifying, unless they were special in some way. Although you may want to block its release, there won't be any additional changes made to the original script in support of the ordinary people.

Cause history accepts Only The pornography of force, That of Murderers and psychopaths, the rest of us of course Stricken from the narrative wholesale. A backdrop to their jail!
History only glorifies violent people such as murderers and psychopaths, excluding the rest of us from the storyline. We are pushed to the background and wrongfully forced into being a part of their story.

As we With two pence, Are rushed right swiftly off the stage with Child bones, Of asses, The story couldn't call for the masses. No floral bouquet, No breaking of legs, No recurring role, No artistic control!
We are unceremoniously forced out of the spotlight with whatever little we have, passing on our legacy to the next generation. We barely get any recognition or acknowledgement; we are nothing but mere props in their story.

Its so weird these days, This torment we face, Its all left to chance, A piece of advice, If you're cast on thin ice, You may as well dance.
Modern times are strange to live in, and we face so much suffering with no apparent rhyme or reason behind it. But no matter what happens, we should keep going and enjoy our lives to the fullest extent possible.

Do what you feel you must, But as for me I was not Put upon this earth To subjugate or serve.
Everyone should do what they think is best for them, but personally, the singer doesn't believe that they were put on Earth just to be under someone else's control or servitude.
