*Note:
In the early 90s, the name Psyche was also used as an alias of Detroit techno artist Carl Craig. Under this early pseudonym the legendary Detroit based techno producer released a few 12"s on Transmat - later compiled onto 'Elements', alongside other material written under his BFC alias, and released on Craig's own Planet E label.
Also, a short lived west coast Scottish new wave/rock band called Psyche released a 7" single in 1982.
Hypnotized
Psyche Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
This is the hunger never satisfied
Inexistence no protection
You are caught in the headlights
Overdosed on appetite
Ravenous at midnight
Hypnotized
Nothing sacred here tonight
Hypnotized
Blind until the morning light
In the glaring neon twilight
Til there is no place unknown
Skin's voracious appetite
Hunger deep into the bone
Overdosed on appetite
Lock the door behind you
Beat me, bite me
Feed me, spite me
Bruised and bleeding
Always needing
The lyrics of Psyche's "Hypnotized" talk about the allure of the unknown and seduction, describing it as a hallway that is hungry and never satisfied. It talks about how there is no protection against this seduction and how you can get caught up in it like headlights catch a deer. The song talks about how the appetite for the unknown and the mysterious is almost like an addiction that has been overdosed on, leaving one ravenous at midnight. It is almost as if the hunger is insatiable and there is no escaping it.
The lyrics go on to describe how the hallway leads to a place where there is nothing sacred, and being hypnotized here is a common occurrence. The singer describes the effect of the seduction as blind until the morning light, almost as if experiencing a trance-like state. It talks about how one's hunger for new experiences and thrills skin-deep and deep into the bone like an addiction. The bridge of the song talks about being beaten, bitten, fed, and then despited, with the singer always left bruised and bleeding, always in need of more.
Overall, the song seems to be a commentary on how we seek out new experiences and thrills, but it comes at a cost. The more we are seduced by the unknown, the more we become addicted to it, leading to a never-ending cycle of hunger and need. It is almost like a modern retelling of the Pandora's box myth, urging us to be wary and cautious of the seduction of the unknown.
