“Common people”
Pulp Lyrics

She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College
That's where I
Caught her eye
She told me that her Dad was loaded
I said "In that case I'll have a rum and Coca Cola"
She said "Fine"
And then in thirty seconds time she said

I wanna live like common people
I wanna do whatever common people do
Wanna sleep with common people
I wanna sleep with common people
Like you
What else could I do
I said "I'll, I'll see what I can do"

I took her to a supermarket
I don't know why
But I had to start it somewhere
So it started there
I said, "Pretend you've got no money"
She just laughed and said
"Oh you're so funny"
I said "Yeah?
Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here?
Are you sure"

You wanna live like common people
You wanna see whatever common people see
Wanna sleep with common people
You wanna sleep with common people
Like me
But she didn't understand
She just smiled and held my hand

Rent a flat above a shop
Cut your hair and get a job
Smoke some fags and play some pool
Pretend you never went to school
But still you'll never get it right
'Cause when you're laid in bed at night
Watching roaches climb the wall
If you called your Dad he could stop it all, yeah

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do whatever common people do
Never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
And then dance and drink and screw
Because there's nothing else to do

Sing along with the common people
Sing along and it might just get you through
Laugh along with the common people
Laugh along even though they're laughing at you
And the stupid things that you do
Because you think that poor is cool

Like a dog lying in a corner
They will bite you and never warn you
Look out, they'll tear your insides out
'Cause everybody hates a tourist
Especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh
Yeah and the chip stains and grease
Will come out in the bath

You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And they burn so bright
Whilst you can only wonder why
Rent a flat above a shop
Cut your hair and get a job
Smoke some fags and play some pool
Pretend you never went to school
But still you'll never get it right
'Cause when you're laid in bed at night
Watching roaches climb the wall
If you called your Dad he could stop it all, yeah

Never live like common people
Never do what common people do
Never fail like common people
Never watch your life slide out of view
And then dance and drink and screw
Because there's nothing else to do

Wanna live with common people like you
Wanna live with common people like you
Wanna live with common people like you
Wanna live with common people like you
Wanna live with common people like you
Wanna live with common people like you
Wanna live with common people like you
Oh, la la la la
Oh, la la la la
Oh, la la la la
Oh, la la la la la la

Oh yeah

Overall Meaning

“Common people” is a song by the British band Pulp which was released in 1995. The song tells a story of a wealthy woman who tells the singer that she wants to live like common people. The singer takes her to a supermarket and asks her to pretend she has no money, but she doesn’t understand what it is like to truly struggle to survive. The chorus is catchy and rebellious, with the woman declaring that she wants to do everything that common people do, but the singer insisting she will never truly experience what it is like to live like that. The song has become an anthem of working-class youth and continues to be an iconic song today.

The lyrics of “Common people” are a critique of social and economic inequality, with the wealthy woman representing the ignorance and privilege of the upper classes. The song highlights the fact that poverty is not a choice, but a result of structural inequalities that are difficult to overcome. The song’s popularity is partly due to the catchy melody and driving guitars, but also due to the lyrics, which strike a chord with many people who have experienced poverty or marginalization in their own lives.

I said, "Pretend you've got no money" She just laughed and said "Oh you're so funny" I said "Yeah? Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here? Are you sure"
I suggested that she pretend to be broke, but she found it amusing. I pointed out the somber mood of the store.

You wanna live like common people You wanna see whatever common people see Wanna sleep with common people You wanna sleep with common people Like me But she didn't understand She just smiled and held my hand
I reiterated her desire to live like the working class, but she didn't fully comprehend. She instead expressed affection for me.

Rent a flat above a shop Cut your hair and get a job Smoke some fags and play some pool Pretend you never went to school But still you'll never get it right 'Cause when you're laid in bed at night Watching roaches climb the wall If you called your Dad he could stop it all, yeah
I listed off things that the working class might do, and how even if you try to emulate them, you won't understand the struggles they face. Rich people like her could always turn to family if things get too rough.

You'll never live like common people You'll never do whatever common people do Never fail like common people You'll never watch your life slide out of view And then dance and drink and screw Because there's nothing else to do
I restated that she will never truly be able to live like the working class, and therefore won't experience the trials and tribulations that come with it, as well as the limited options for entertainment.

Sing along with the common people Sing along and it might just get you through Laugh along with the common people Laugh along even though they're laughing at you And the stupid things that you do Because you think that poor is cool
I suggest that in order to fit in, we should try to blend in and act like the working class, even if they are mocking us, because we find it trendy.

Like a dog lying in a corner They will bite you and never warn you Look out, they'll tear your insides out 'Cause everybody hates a tourist Especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh Yeah and the chip stains and grease Will come out in the bath
I warn her that the working class may become aggressive towards outsiders who are mockingly trying to fit in, and that their lifestyle is not glamorous as it will leave stains and messes.

You will never understand How it feels to live your life With no meaning or control And with nowhere left to go You are amazed that they exist And they burn so bright Whilst you can only wonder why
I explain that we will never truly comprehend the struggles of the working class, who don't have the same privilege of control and opportunity we have, and that even though they may struggle, they find a way to keep going.

Wanna live with common people like you Wanna live with common people like you Wanna live with common people like you Wanna live with common people like you Wanna live with common people like you Wanna live with common people like you Wanna live with common people like you Oh, la la la la Oh, la la la la Oh, la la la la Oh, la la la la la la
She expresses a desire once more to live like the working class.

Oh yeah
A punctuation to note that the song is ending.
