Suffocation
Pulsars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love's like suffocation
it takes you under makes you dizzy
is not love for everyone
how dare i say

it's what she said to me
it was so typical
like in the magazine
it was so typical
and that was the first mistake
it went right to my brain

love's like suffocation
it takes you under
makes you dizzy
is not love for everyone
how dare i say

and as the story goes
it was so typical
i thought i was in vogue
it was so obvious
that was my fifth mistake
i guess i'm just a first-rate flake

love's like suffocation
it takes you under
makes you dizzy
is not love for everyone
how dare i say

is it the jet set that gets us off

how dare i say
prepare for suffocation

Overall Meaning

In Pulsars' song Suffocation, the artist describes love as a feeling that takes one under and makes one feel dizzy. The lyrics suggest that love is not for everyone despite society's expectations of it being a universal experience. The artist reflects on a conversation with a lover who uttered phrases so typical of what one would expect to read in a magazine. This conversation, which appears to have been rehearsed, went straight to the artist's brain and left an indelible impression. It appears that the artist was trying to say that love should be genuine and not conform to norms perpetuated by mass media.

As the story continued, the artist thought that they were in vogue and thought that the relationship seemed obvious. However, this was the artist's fifth mistake, indicating that they had made similar mistakes in the past. It seems that the artist was already accustomed to making errors in judging their romantic partners. The climax appears to be a warning that being enamored with the jet-setting culture may end up suffocating one. The ending phrase, "prepare for suffocation," could be interpreted as a cautionary note that the feeling of love could end in disappointment.

Overall, the song appears to be a critique of mainstream culture's perceptions of love and relationships. The lyrics suggest that society's expectations of love may not be inherently genuine and that the media should not dictate what constitutes a successful relationship.

Another example of a label going under and taking a talented act with them. I still have a promo copy of their cd and the single for Submission song which I picked up after seeing them as an opening act in Chicago. That was a great time for music in Chicago so many good bands and great people. Triple Fast Action being one of my favorite acts among them. Midwest Power Pop Rules

David Evans

Great retro synthpop band. This song got a lot of airplay in Chicago in 1997. To bad the band could not stick it out for the long haul. It's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll.
