Mending Is Better Than Ending
Punch Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In Punch's song "Mending Is Better Than Ending," the lyrics depict a fear of judgement and failure. The fear of being scrutinized by others and failing at something can be debilitating, causing one to overlook the smaller issues that arise. The "landscape full of tiny holes" metaphor refers to the smaller issues that can go unnoticed from a distance, but become more evident upon closer inspection. These issues may seem minuscule at first, but they can eventually lead to larger problems that are harder to fix. The line "upon closer inspection they might be big enough for a finger or even a hand to poke through, rip down" reinforces the idea that ignoring these small problems can eventually lead to a complete breakdown.
The chorus, "Rather than start over, better to keep patching it up," provides a message of hope and perseverance. Starting over can be daunting, but patching up the holes and small issues can lead to a stronger foundation. It's important to recognize that it's okay to fail and make mistakes, as long as one is willing to learn and grow from them. The theme of the song overall is to not give up when things get tough, but instead to keep pushing forward and mending what is broken.
