Waste Away
Puppy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sitting on my shelf, sheltered from the wind
As I wait and wait for you
Yeah, I'll wait and wait
To hold me as I'm suffocating
Waste away with you, girl
Dig my grave for two
There's somebody else to hold onto
Riding lighting stones, stop the patch they give
In my human form, put in for a friend
As I wait and wait for you
Yeah, I'll wait and wait
To hold me as I'm suffocating
Waste away with you, girl
Dig my grave for two
I don't mind, it's honestly just fine as long as
There's somebody else to hold onto
Waste away with you, girl
Dig my grave for two
I don't mind, it's honestly just fine as long as
You, yeah I'll have you
(I, ooh)
(I, ooh)
(I, ooh)
(I, ooh)
The opening lines of "Waste Away" embody the feelings of disconnection and alienation that often come with anxiety and depression. The singer admits that they don't understand themselves or the world they're living in, as they sit "on [their] shelf, sheltered from the wind." The lyrics suggest a sense of isolation, as if the singer is cut off from the rest of the world - perhaps by their own choice, or perhaps because of some emotional barrier they can't seem to break through. The repeated refrain of "I'll wait and wait for you / To hold me as I'm suffocating" suggests a desperate desire for connection and intimacy, but also a fear of reaching out and being vulnerable. The image of suffocating is especially powerful here, conveying a sense of claustrophobia or even panic, as if the singer is struggling to breathe.
The chorus of the song is both melancholic and bittersweet. The line "waste away with you, girl / dig my grave for two" suggests a willingness to let go and surrender, as if the singer is tired of fighting and would rather simply fade away - but the fact that they're asking someone else to join them in that process speaks to a deep sense of connection and longing. The song seems to be expressing the idea that shared pain is somehow easier to bear, that the loneliness and isolation of depression can be eased by another person's presence. The repeated phrase "I don't mind, it's honestly just fine as long as / There's somebody else to hold onto" drives this point home, underscoring the idea that human connection is a powerful antidote to the despair and hopelessness that often accompany mental illness.
