Silver Shore's Lake
Pure Bathing Culture Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Capricorn, here we stand at silver shore's lake
It's shining black and gold
With some stones in our hands and our feet in the sand
Forever growing old
And our reflection looks strange looking back to us
Our eyes, they open wide
And we can see the tides so we say goodbye
And watch the waters rise
I wish my heart was deep enough
So deep that I could keep you, love
So deep that I could keep it off
I wish my heart...
Silent path, silent lake; we see every wave
Our eyes are black and gold
We push our palms to the stars, everyone is ours
We do not fear the cold
And our reflection looks strange looking back to us
Our arms, they open wide
We drop our hands to our sides as the waters rise
And take us from inside
I wish my heart was deep enough
So deep that I could keep you, love
So deep that I could keep it off
I wish my heart...
Be careful cousin, be careful blood
If the cold doesn't get you then the other thing does
Be careful brother, be careful love
Be careful father, be careful son

Or you'll never find another one
Be careful father, be careful son

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Pure Bathing Culture's song Silver Shore's Lake can be interpreted in different ways, but a possible interpretation is that the song is about the passage of time, the fleeting nature of life and holding onto love. The mention of Capricorn at the beginning of the song could be a reference to astrology, where Capricorn represents discipline, responsibility, and a need for control. The silver shore's lake is described as "shining black and gold," which could represent the passage of time and the dual nature of everything, as time can be both beautiful and daunting. The mention of stones in the hands and feet in the sand adds to the imagery of a fleeting and physical existence.

The reflection of the two individuals standing at the lake is described as looking "strange" as they contemplate the passing of time and watch the tides rise. The repeated lines "I wish my heart was deep enough, so deep that I could keep you, love, so deep that I could keep it off" could be interpreted as a desire to keep love and memories alive, even as time passes and the waters rise. The second verse talks about the individuals pushing their palms to the stars, claiming everything as theirs and not fearing the cold, which could represent their defiance of the inevitability of time and death.

The last part of the song is a warning to be careful of losing love and connections with others, as it is easy to lose them and never find them again. The repetition of "be careful" addresses different family members and emphasizes the importance of not taking people for granted and cherishing every moment spent with them.

Overall, the lyrics of Silver Shore's Lake depict the bittersweet nature of life and love, and the importance of holding onto those connections.

The clip is so beautiful and heartwarming it almost makes me shed a few tears. Remembering my camps whilst at school. How almost everyone was so pure and innocent and naturally themselves before the weight of the world and adulthood traumatizes us all......😂💓

Fantastic video, David, perfect to the song.  Where did you get this video footage?  I am guessing (1) the 1980s;  (2) by the look of the dunes and the size of the body of water it is one of the Great Lake - probably Lake Michigan; (3) the teens in the video are a very good looking and wholesome group.  That would also suggest Midwestern America at summer camp in the 80s.  The video invokes a strong nostalgic emotion.  It is very good art.
