Be My Lover
Pyroclastic Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And if there's someone you can live without
Then do so
And if there's someone you can just shove out
Well do so
You can be my Yoko Ono
You can follow me wherever I go
Be my, be my
Be my, be my Yoko Ono
Oh, isn't it beautiful to see
Two people so much in love?
Bare naked as two virgins hand in hand
And hand and hand in glove
But now that I'm far away
It doesn't seem to me to be such a pain
To have you hanging off my ankle
Like some kind of ball and chain
You can be my Yoko Ono
You can follow me wherever I go
Be my, be my
Be my, be my Yoko Ono
Oh no, here we go
Our life is just one big pun
Oh no, here we go as Yoko sings
Aieee!
I know that when I say this
I may be stepping on pins and needles
But I don't like all these people
Slagging her for breaking up the Beatles
Don't blame it on Yokey
If I was John and you were Yoko
I would gladly give up musical genius
Just to have you as my very own personal Venus
(Hit it)
You can be my Yoko Ono
You can follow me wherever I go
Be my, be my
Be my, be my Yoko Ono
Be my, be my, be my
Be my, be my Yoko Ono
Be my, be my, be my
Be my, be my Yoko Ono

Be my, be my, be my
Be my, be my Yoko Ono

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pyroclastic’s song Be My Lover talk about the idea of freedom and acceptance in relationships. The singer suggests that if there is someone in your life that is causing you distress or pain, it’s better to live without them or push them out of your life. The opening lines seem to suggest that the singer is encouraging the listener to be independent and not be attached to someone who doesn’t bring value to their life. However, they then go on to say that the listener can be their Yoko Ono, which contradicts their previous statement.

The chorus then shifts to say that they want the listener to follow them wherever they go, which implies that they do want a strong connection with someone. The reference to Yoko Ono, who was famously blamed for breaking up The Beatles, is interesting as the song seems to be about love and acceptance, while Yoko Ono is often vilified for the opposite. The line “our life is just one big pun” is also intriguing and possibly means that their relationship is a big joke or a game.

Later in the song, the singer acknowledges that having someone cling to them like a “ball and chain” can be a pain. However, the chorus repeats the call for the listener to be their Yoko Ono. The final lines are a play on words as the singer says they will gladly give up “musical genius” to have the listener as their Venus, which likely refers to the Roman goddess of love and beauty.
