The Q in his name stands for Queens, and it is also said to be a name that represents his ability to get into one’s ears.
Early career:
Q-Tip's first appearance on record was on the Jungle Brothers' Straight Out the Jungle in 1988. Besides performing with his popular and successful jazz-influenced hip hop group, Tip also did production work (under his production alias "the Abstract" or often — along with fellow Tribe member Ali Shaheed Muhammad and the late Slum Village member Jay Dee — as part of The Ummah) for artists such as Nas ("One Love," from Illmatic, 1994), Mobb Deep (co-producer on "Give up the Goods (Just Step)," "Temperature's Rising," and "Drink Away the Pain," from The Infamous, 1995) and even R&B divas Mariah Carey ("Honey," from Butterfly, 1997) and Whitney Houston ("Fine," from Greatest Hits).
Solo career:
A Tribe Called Quest disbanded in 1998, after which Q-Tip pursued a solo career. His first solo singles, "Vivrant Thing" and "Breathe & Stop," were far more pop-oriented than anything he had done in A Tribe Called Quest, as was his solo debut LP for Arista Records, Amplified. His 2002 follow-up, Kamaal the Abstract, although critically acclaimed and issued a catalog number, was never released because the label believed that it did not have commercial appeal. His next album, The Renaissance, was released November 2008.
A Tribe Called Quest reunited in 2006 and played a limited number of dates. The group was composed of its original lineup, including Tip and occasional member Jarobi White. Early the next year, Tip signed a new solo deal with Motown/Universal Records.
As of late, Q-Tip has been very active, once again happily reunited with the full line-up of A Tribe Called Quest on the 2K7 NBA Bounce Tour and regaining control of his previously label-owned MySpace page. He has filled the page up with demos and rarities, (some of them from Kamaal the Abstract), and has announced he is negotiating for the ownership of the masters of earlier material from his previous labels and plans to release them independently. Currently, he resides in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.
Q-Tip has recently stated that he will be forming a hip hop group with fellow rapper Common, called "The Standard."

And I think about my chance for me to intervene
And it's up to me to bring back the hope
Put feeling in the music that you could quote
Not saying that I hate it, cause here I kinda dig it
But what good is a ear if a Q-Tip isn't in it?
So to stick it in, to inform your friend
Your boy from the hood, is on that shit again
To splash on the mass from low to upper class
And when the records spins and sometimes blows a wind
A fickleness of friends, they sometimes hate again
They always bring up Tribe on me, could not survive on me
Cause this is my man's on me, this is my fams
And here's somethin' new, it's front row for you
So don't misconstrue, it's Tribal and true
My dudes who hustle hard, don't stop your repertoire
As long as you could see, it's you who's stayin' we
Cause life is filled with (?) pills and little pearls and shit
I'm fuckin' up, I mean, I'm trippin' up
But still, there is a void, and people get annoyed
Let's focus is on the feel, before we get a deal
Come on
Figurin' life can be a thing, the wilderness is wild to me
But you're not alone, I see we're just the same
Figuring out where we should be
Figurin' life can be a thing, the wilderness is wild to me
But you're not alone, I see we're just the same
With the vibe we came, to put back on the street
Let's take care of ours, and ensure we eat
And Oprah an 'em, they criticize the boys
Without in between, they lose all their boys
They can't keep us down, we're dominate and brown
And those other shades, they join our parade
But wait there's rain ahead, like Brit and Kevin Fed
And magazine debris, is shit she gotta see it
I'm no different to you, I goes through it too
I thumbs through the page, I don't come of age
I'm not a deity, I'm far from perfect, see
I roll the tumble weed, it's just a humble scene
That I present to you, is just a mister crue
Who burrs a harmony, and soon a melody
That speaks to where we are, the door, I hope's ajar
And soon we're walkin' in, a blip, it's just to say, "Come on"
Figurin' life can be a thing, the wilderness is wild to me
But you're not alone, I see we're just the same
Figuring out where we should be
Figurin' life can be a thing, the wilderness is wild to me
But you're not alone, I see we're just the same
Figuring out where we should be
Figurin' life can be a thing, the wilderness is wild to me
But you're not alone, I see we're just the same
The lyrics of "Johnny Is Dead" by Q-Tip are about Q-Tip himself reflecting on his role in the music industry and thinking about how he can make a difference. In the first verse, he talks about how he sometimes becomes disengaged while looking at the screen, which could be a metaphor for him losing interest in the music industry. He starts thinking about his own potential to make a change and wants to bring hope back into the music through meaningful lyrics. He mentions that he isn't trying to hate on the current state of music because he likes some of it. Still, he believes that he has something to bring to the table and that his music can inspire people in a way that others cannot.
The second verse touches on the struggles of life and how it can be hard to find one's place in the world. Q-Tip mentions that life can feel like a wilderness at times, but he wants people to know that they're not alone in their struggles. He wants to unite people through his music and create a platform where all voices can be heard, especially those who are often criticized and marginalized, like people of color.
Overall, the song is a call to action for Q-Tip and others to make meaningful music that people can relate to and find hope in. It's a reminder that music can bring people together and create change, even in the most challenging times.
